LOS ANGELES, (AP) -- The man who created "Gilligan's Island" and "The Brady Bunch" has died.

Great niece Robin Randall says Sherwood Schwartz died at 4 a.m. Tuesday. He was 94.

Schwartz was a veteran comedy writer when he created two of TV's best-remembered sitcoms in the 1960s. Over the years, they have inspired parodies, spinoffs and countless stand-up comedy jokes.

Tina Louise did appear on the mini-reunion on “Roseanne”, which was actually quite amusing (for a two-minute gag). Sherwood Schwartz appeared on that, too.

Which well known actress turned down that role before Tina got it? Or so I have read.

Nah, not what I was asking. A well know actress was asked to play that role but turned it down or so I read.

It was my favorite show as well watching it in the 1960s and on re-runs in the 1970s. I bought the series on DVD and my 9-year old son loves it as well, and I get a kick out of watching it with him. Only problem, he's a Marry Ann kid, and I always preferred Ginger. I think a DNA test is in order.

“Ginger/Mary Ann”

I know I’m in the minority on this one, but I always liked Ginger.

Schwartz also wrote the Gilligan’s Island theme song. Well, he outlived most of the cast.

From the movie "Back to the Beach:"

"You see these two coconuts? He could build a nuclear reactor out of these, but he couldn't fix a hole in a boat." Bob Denver as a bartender, complaining about his time on an island somewhere.

I hate to think how PC the show would be today. The Howells, well I just don’t want to think about what they would do with a wealthy industrialist.

There would be at least two gay characters. Most of the cast would be some minority. There would be constant jokes about sex between all the characters. etc. etc. etc.

He could build a nuclear reactor out of these, but he couldn’t fix a hole in a boat.

Yes, that’s a good point. Plug the damn hole!

This is sad.

I met him once several years ago when he brought his wife to the theater I worked for (Palm Springs Follies) for their anniversary.

He was so sweet and so desperate to be remembered (like a lot of forgotten Hollywood people). I asked him for his autograph, and fussed over him a little to lift his spirits. He left smiling.

I call shenanigans. This is just trying to impose a pattern that was never intended after the fact to sound fancier and more intellectual.

The Professor — No one could accuse him of Pride. He was quite humble and self-effacing, despite his intellect.
Thurston Howell III - Greed. Okay, fine, but he was a stock comic character. ALL millionaires were portrayed that way since the days of vaudeville.
Ginger — Lust. She flaunted it, but that’s not lust. Maybe you could attribute pride to her.
Mrs. Howell — Gluttony. Really? She was thin as a rail. In what episode did she demonstrate gluttony?
The Skipper — Anger. Occasionally, and only at Gilligan, and for good reason. Not his defining feature.
Gilligan — Sloth. Inaccurate. He was always up at dawn fishing, for example. He was just stupid. And that’s hardly a sin.

It was just a good sitcom. No need to read into it what’s not there.

If he were working in today’s environment, he would be forced to include a “positive gay character” in every sitcom.?

You've got that one right. Complete with "love scenes".

Haven’t you ever wondered about the Skipper and his Little Buddy?

Yeah, it’s pure fiction (as are the 7 ‘deadly sins’)

However...

Ginger-———Happy
Mary-Ann-——Bashful
Professor——Doc
Skipper———Grumpy
Gilligan-——Dopey
Mr. Howell-—Sneezy
Mrs. Howell—Sleepy
