PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon man got a big surprise on a commercial flight from Seattle to Anchorage, Alaska, when he was stung by a scorpion while sitting in his plane seat.

Jeff Ellis of West Linn said he was trying to sleep on a red-eye Alaska Airlines flight June 17 when he felt something in his sleeve and tried to brush it away. He said he felt the crawling again, looked down and saw the culprit.

"I picked my hand up and said, 'Oh, my God. That's a scorpion,'" Ellis told KPTV.

He said he grabbed the scorpion with a napkin and showed it to his girlfriend, but not before it stung him on the elbow.

Coming next from an airline near you:

a $30 surcharge to sit in the "No Scorpions Section".

So that's where it's guaranteed you won't have to listen to "Rock You Like a Hurricane"?

No different than being stung by a yellow jacket unless you are sensitive to the venom. There are Mexican and Sahara Desert Scorpions that have a more toxic venom but the average scorpion is no more dangerous than a bee.

Had a neighbor in Costa Rica killed by one. The damned thing had settled into the man’s house slippers during the night. He got up the next morning and broke a cardinal rule there by not checking first before putting bare feet anywhere. Knocking my shoes on the floor and checking before putting them on is something I do even now by life long habit. Drives the family nuts.

Knocking and dumping one’s shoes before putting them on is a habit that may save a person a lot of grief. Here we have Brown Recluses, Black Widows and other insects that love to inhabit the toe of boots placed on the back porch that have too much mud on them to wear in the house. Like you, I developed the habit while living in Texas where the scorpions were the main culprits. Not too long ago, I dumped out my work boots and there was a skink in one of them.

I've done that. On accident. My wife has long hair, and on occasion, little tangles of hair wind up on the floor. Well, the lights in the bedroom aren't very bright (ha, neither was I, at the time), and I saw what I thought was a little tangle of hair. I bent down, picked it up, and it was moving. I dispatched it, but I didn't sleep very well that night.

The scorpion has been hired by TSA as a body cavity inspector.

We find small dead ones in the house occasionally that are killed by our bug huntin’ cat. I’m glad she finds them first.

I heard this on the local news this morning. I don’t think I will be going to AZ on any airlines soon.

But, I have no reason to go there...period...so I’m okay. ;o)

Now...if they are robot TSA inspectors, I will complain.
