Went to my doctor for the first time in awhile and got some bad news. My A1C blood sugar was almost 12 and my blood pressure averaged about 190/110. They wanted to admit me right then and there, but instead gave me a shopping bag full of medications. Since my wife had her stroke I haven't really been taking care of myself and now it's come to a head. If I don't do a complete 180 I'll be dead before the year is out. I have committed to mall walking (exercising) seven days a week for 30 minutes a day and cutting my carbs and sugars drastically. Please pray for me or think of me as I try to save my own life. Thanks!
1) find some buddies here on FR who need/want to lose weight. Start a weekly thread to keep tabs on one another and lend each other support and advice.
Vet, if such a weekly thread gets started please add my name. I’ll bet there is a ton of guys who’d follow and contribute. I understand that a support network is key with weight loss, improving health.
Prayers to you.
I am a type 1 and on an insulin pump I will tell you that as a type 2 you will have a very hard time trying to get the insurace company to apy for one for you.It took a year to get mien and I’m a type 1 and have been on insulin for most of my life.IIRC the guidelines for a type 2 is that you ahve to have been on insuin for X amount of time and also still have high A1C’s.
Prayers up here!

Keep up the walking, 2nd.
Exercise is so good for all of us. Make it happen so you can continue to live and fight for this great country. Prayers up for your wife as well.
Prayer said for you and your wife.
I was in the Smokies in March. Here in Seattle they would be called foothills :>) Truely.
Check out pictures of the Cascades and Olympic mountains and you will see what I mean. Seattle is surrounded by these mountains.
If you haven’t been here, you should visit. Bring a coat. Summer here is usually 70 deg or so :>)
Hey....bad numbers, maybe..but do listen to your doc and if you can do what he tells you to do...they all will improve. Might wanna ask him if he thinks a stress test is in order tho before starting anything too vigorous!!:)
Just said a prayer for you. Now an order.....
YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF NOW! YOU ARE WAY TOO IMPORTANT FOR US TO LOSE AND IT WOULD BE A GREAT LOSS TO ALL OF US IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO YOU!
Okay, I’m done with my yelling and reprimand. Please please, do what ever is necessary to get yourself back into good health.
You are one of my fav’s. Please.
Wow, what do they cost?
In my own case I have to stay off insulin as long as I can
because I have a CDL Class driver license and Truck driving is a big part of my skill set.
2ndDivisionVet, you’re doing the right thing. I was in the same situation two years ago, numbers not exactly the same but pretty close. I got mine down with a low carb diet, a few supplements and dropped 35 pounds in just a few months.
The only thing I can see that I did was some supplements to get me jump started. It took a few months to get things to the normal range. I didn’t start exercising until after I lost the weight. There is a good fiber supplement that also helps. Investigate glycemic load concepts as well. That is how much a particular food can spike your blood glucose. If you need any help with advice I could probably help you. I decide what kind of things to eat based on the glycemic load, or how much of a portion size to eat.
I want to help, will pray. Have hope. I know what you are doing can be successful.
Got a similar warning in 1996 at the age of 45. Cholesterol tripled in one year. No more meat, easy on the sugar, keep the weight down. Still here by the grace of God.
God expects us to do our part so He can do His. It’s a team effort. The scripture that got to me was in the Book of Hosea.
“My children perish for a lack of knowledge(vision)”
May God give you the strength and self-control to help Him sustain your life.
There is a lot of good advice from some of the comments to you, about fish oil and omega3. One more thing, the thing that got my morning glucose reading down for the first time was a diet from a book called Mastering Leptin by Byron Richardson. He also has a blog with information.
He talks about spacing meals apart and not eating snacks between meals. This helps your pancreas function as it should and allows it to have some rest time between meals. The book explains it. When I first started on his diet, my numbers dropped down right away and have stayed down consistently. Amazon carries the book. Best of luck to you, and your wife.
Take care brother. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
WALKING+AVACADO=All Good!
Well I have a one touch ping that they bought for me almost 3 years ago and it was $5699 then.Remember that the new heathcare law places a higher tax on medical devices so the price is most likely higher now because I think that started this yer.
Yes, with exercise and diet..
I really like you!!! I am so sorry to hear this.
BEGGING you to order this book: http://www.amazon.com/Paleo-Solution-Original-Human-Diet/dp/0982565844/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1309497909&sr=1-1
You need to learn about the ultimate diet to bring your metabolic disorder or diabetes to a halt FAST. The paleo diet will have you drop ALL your grains and beans, your sugary foods, your fake sugar or processed foods.
You will be able to eat all the healthy meat and fish, eggs, veggies, good fat, some fresh fruit, that you want, and it will be yummy. Diet is more important than exercise, but starting with walking is great too.
You can completely change these numbers and save your own life. You are very important and we all need you around here in 2012 and on and on into the future!!
The first four to seven days when you give up sugars and grain foods might be hard. But thereafter, you will feel so good and you won’t want those foods any more.
Please do this for yourself.
Of course I will be praying for you.
Yes, I just told him that too. This is so essential, Vet. You really will not regret it. If you do, FReepmail me and I will refund the cost of that book. We all need to understand what our bodies desperately need -- healthy saturated fats, mostly -- and what is hurting them -- grains and sugars. We are not meant to eat them (except fruit). There is NOTHING in grains that is good enough to compel eating them, and it is stunning to learn this, after humans have been using them as a mainstay of our diets for 100s of years. They do fill your belly and are cheap to grow and save, but that is about it. They are nutrient poor and they just turn to sugar in our bodies, along with hurting our digestion.
You can turn around this bad news and make it good news. I know you can and we all will be supporting you!
I agree with the magnesium. Magnesium supplements, alone without calcium, and in capsule form, not tablets, will help you too. Start small and keep increasing the dose to about 400 or so. You can get loose stools from it - that will tell you that less will be enough for you.
Also, make your doc test your vitamin D levels. Then supplement enough (gelcaps, again NOT tablets, most are useless) to get your level of vitamin D in your blood to over 60. The sun doesn’t raise it as much as one would think. And forget the puny amounts in milk and stuff. Get tested every 3 months to make sure you find the right dose to supplement daily. It could well be over 10,000 units and that is FINE. Whatever your body needs to get the D to a therapeutic level. Do NOT let your doc tell you it’s toxic if your level in under 70 on the blood test. It’s GREAT and will help you.
Also take the B vitamins, and Vitamin c - about 1000 mg of the latter. Avoid tablets unless they are chewable. (Big horse pills are USELESS usually because they do not dissolve.)
