Good morning gardeners. Well this past week brought a respite from the sunny hot weather here in Mississippi. We received two days of beneficial rains, which helped to revive my garden. Watching the radar it looked like a good portion of south-central Texas from San Antonio to the northeast corner received some rain also. I hope it was helpful to our gardeners over that way. My winter squash are growing like mad and my hot and sweet peppers are doing great. What is left of my tomatoes seem to have revived a bit during these rainy and cloudy days. I really hope that what ever weather you have had improved a bit for you and your gardens this past week.
If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.
We live in the a designated poverty area. The best thing is we have no county zoning law's to speak of, and almost no restrictions on property in our subdivision. So far everyone ignores the violations anyhow.LOL.
The city has restrictions though, but so far no serious annexation threats.LOL.
What comes in the plastic containers used by your Deli?
Thanks, Bert. We have some left over from building our daughters house, but I doubt if they are food grade, and by now they have all kinds of junk pressed into scratches and stuff. Even if cleaned up, I don’t know what kind of stuff might leech into the plants.
Well, I don’t get to do it as long as I want, but it is nice to be out of the rat race. I still babysit grandkids for 6-8 hours 4 days a week, so I can’t be an total couch potato LOL.
Thanks Tatze, I’ve downloaded the information and try a couple.
Thanks, Mr.Bender. I have always purchased online so that I could compare various varieties by looking at the pictures to see what suits my taste buds. My amaturish gardening efforts are miniscule compared to the Bender Estates, so my need for seed is small. I may buy some in bulk next year and help my buddy out a bit that has a large garden and gives us some of his overflow.
Everything is relevant rd. There are thousands of citizen living in high rises who “garden” in a couple of pots inside a window. My real vegie garden days are well behind me as Mrs Bender (2011) plants more and more annual flowers and she really brought things home to me when I was complaining about the author-rite-us in my thumbs and she said “for goodness sakes Tube, you’re going to be 80 in 2 more years”! I don’t think she even heard the gunshot....
r_d, Mrs Bender says that should have been... “Everything is relative” ???
Pickles or sauerkraut.
Shame on you JaDblonde! Your tirade against pickle buckets effectively killed this informational thread depriving those of us still incarcerated in the Cuckoo’s Nest. (just kidding) We had over a inch of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday and we can see some pretty dramatic growth in everything especially the corn, potatoes and lettuce. The bad news is that about 60% of my Garlic is still in the ground and the damp soil can cause mold in the skin. I will dig it today and hang it in a fence to cure although I may put some in the greenhouse to speed it up. Another down side to the rain is the noise the weeds make as they re attack the garden...
Weeds growing after a rain do sound like a Sedan Deville coming back to life following a good flatening in a car crusher. I'm tickled to hear that some of your crops are growing. After a rain you can really tell that corn is a grass ... it grows faster than a lawn.
Now that is just the most depressing thing I have heard today! I will never look at corn with awe and wonderment again...
Oh, but you should, Mr. Bender. More later ... I'm off to finish feeding the barnyard animals.
I NEVER had a single one with such an odor. I never had to use bleach to clean them. I just washed them with soap and water, sometimes a little baking soda and let them “air” out for a week. Used them to store all kinds of stuff.
I still have one left that I use to store some baby clothes away for the grand kids to use with their dolls. So don't let JaDB’s experience stop you from checking out the pickle containers!LOL.
The buckets that I got had contained dill pickle slices, just like you would get on any hamburger.
Don't know where those buckets went, but they still smelled of dill pickles the last time I saw them!
To paraphrase Butterfly McQueen... “I don’t know nuttin about cleaning no Pickle Barrels Mis Scarlett”...
LOL. It’s all good.
