This is very sad. I think one of the things we have lost in modern rock and roll are instruments like the sax that brought so much life to songs. Mr. Clemons, you will be missed.

“Born to Run” was the ONLY good album Springstein made, due in large part to the Big Man, Clarence.
He will be missed. What a talent.

I will always remember his Santa Claus laughter in the live version of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”. Ho, ho, ho! Rest in peace.

When the change was made uptown
And the big man joined the band
From the coastline to the city
All the little pretties raise their hands
Im gonna sit back right easy and laugh
When scooter and the big man bust this city in half
With a tenth avenue freeze-out, tenth avenue freeze-out

I guess Bruce won’t be able to make out with him on stage anymore. Oh well. Hope he’s on to a better place.

When was the last time you saw band members playing their own insturments, or even using session musicians?

Very sad news, indeed. I saw Clarence Clemons play with the E Street Band and with other outfits over the years. Had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing him years ago.

He had no rock star pretentions. He was humble and polite, but very confident in his playing.

Mr. Clemons used to appear in the Marin County Superior Court frequently for nonpayment of child support. But, he was a good musician.

I imagine Bruce Springsteen must feel the way Duke Ellington did when nonpareil alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges died: Because of this great loss, our band will never sound the same again.

Clarence Clemons was the E Street Band. Springsteen wrote and sang the music, the rhythm section was the backbone, the keyboardsmen the dressing, Springsteen himself the guts (despise his politics, love most of the music), but Clemons was the soul of the band.
