Apple recently passed Google as the most valuable brand in the world. Its extraordinary to think that the worlds top brand has a product portfolio that could fit on a small table. Of course thats part of the reason why Apple is so successful its relentless focus on creating a small number of simple and elegant products. When I was conducting the research for my book, The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs, I came across one story that provides a glimpse into how Steve Jobs and the company he co-founded has achieved its stunning success. The story comes to us courtesy of Nike CEO, Mark Parker. He said shortly after becoming CEO, he talked to Steve Jobs on the phone.
Do you have any advice? Parker asked Jobs. Well, just one thing, said Jobs. Nike makes some of the best products in the world. Products that you lust after. But you also make a lot of crap. Just get rid of the crappy stuff and focus on the good stuff. Parker said Jobs paused and Parker filled the quiet with a chuckle. But Jobs didnt laugh. He was serious. He was absolutely right, said Parker. We had to edit.
Parker used the word edit not in a design sense but in the context of making business decisions. Editing also leads to great product designs and effective communications. According to Steve Jobs, People think focus means saying yes to the thing youve got to focus on. But thats not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. Im actually as proud of the things we havent done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.

meanwhile, my Apple Airport Express router, arrived yesterday and just sits there with a blinking amber light. The setup utility doesn’t recognize it. I thought the selling point of Apple products is “they just work.”
I was in Fry’s a few days ago and priced their laptops again. I don’t know why people that adhere to any form of budget buy them.
On a side note, I’ve noticed that in movies almost everyone uses Apple computers and presidents are generally either black of female.
is your wifi on in system settings?
And how many products did Google manufacture?
I like to scoff at Apple products and then find myself entirely consumed by their usability, and how productive they’ve made me. I care more about that then the plastic.
That said, I still won’t buy an Iphone until answering a phone call is a single button, like on any other functional phone.... and it sure would be nice if I could surf the web without beachballing every other time a Flash ad loads.
Not going to attack Jobs, but frankly, I just don’t see the attraction to paying double for the next gimmick electronic.
You’re already talking over my head. I’m not computer illiterate, but I’ve always connected direct to the internet and never set up a wifi. The instructions say to plug the router into your modem and then run the setup utility. I can’t even get to that point, the light never turns green, it just blinks amber, which the documentation says means it isn’t getting a signal from the modem, and when I run the utility, it doesn’t “see” the router.
I’ve tried it on two different computers, with two different modems, on two different DSL lines. I assume it’s either a bad router or there’s some setting I need to change. If the latter, I don’t know what it is or how to go about finding it. I’m supposed to call Applecare when I get home from work. I guess I’ll figure it out eventually...But I bought an Apple product so I wouldn’t HAVE to go through this rigamarole.
Note, I’m not a hater. I bought an Apple product. I want to like it. But so far it’s not living up to expectations.
I'm quite happy with my HTC. Assuming I have the touchscreen and buttons locked as I normally do when carrying them, incoming calls are answered by tapping the same place twice. With other phones, I've grabbed for them in the holder and inadvertently picked up on a call I didn't want to take, or wanted to let roll-over to voice mail. After you tap it twice, you can speak normally, adjust the volume etc. but you still have to unlock the other functions, so your ear, cheek etc. don't inadvertently trigger other options on the touch screen.
HTC is what I’m considering... heck, I guess the multiple taps for answering a call is a way of life now. I just always find the iphone requires far too much swiping, pinching, dragging, more punching, more tapping.
What I would really love is the ability to use all the groundbreaking new ipad apps only emulated on a macbook.
I like his way of thinking.
Are you saying you didn’t do what the documentation told you to do?
1. Did you plug the modem into the router?
2. After doing one, did you run the setup utility?
Do you see what looks like a little baseball diamond in your upper right hand corner of your screen? Should be next to your speaker or flag icon.
No, I did exactly what the documentation told me to do.
1. yes
2. yes
I am setting this up on a windows pc. I ordered both the router and a macbook pro. The router arrived first so I figured I’d get the network setup and it would be ready when the laptop got here. The utility is supposed to run on either, but like I said in the other post, it never even gets to the point of installing it. The router apparently doesn’t “see” the DSL signal coming from the modem..
You should have a green router status light -- whether your system is on or not.
Re-check the connections to your internet source (satellite modem, cable, etc.)
For example, when my satellite signal drops out due to weather, the status light on my Time Capsule shifts from green to blinking amber...
If you have such a modem, make sure the both of the I/O lights are indicating activity...
The modem is working, I can connect through directly to the internet, but when I connect the router to it router can’t get a signal. Either the router is defective or something is blocking the signal.
Unplug your computer from the modem. Then turn off the modem by unplugging it from the electric outlet. This will clear the memory of the modem. Wait one minute. Then plug the modem back into the electric outlet. Then connect the AirPort Express to the modem.
