He was nicknamed "the Boogie-Man," and was known for his enormous size for a hockey player (6'7", 270 lb.) and his reputation as an intimidating enforcer.
I can't imagine what could have caused this. I sure hope it had nothing to do with head injuries or anything of that sort.
Boogie was always one of my favorites RIP
Really hard to believe he was only 28, way too young
I hope they don’t try to tie this with head injuries. It seems that sports physicians are playing a dangerous game of PC. If they keep it up, boxing, football, hockey, basketball, baseball and MMA will be shadows of their former selves. I still can’t get over the helmets with facemasks on rodeo performers.....without the cowboy hats, they just seem......gay?
Rest in peace.
RIP.
R.I.P.
It seems that more and more evidence is accumulating just how severe the near term, mid term, and long term effects of concussion really are. Nobody, of course, ever thought they were a “good thing” but in the past I think the idea was you got your “bell rung” and then you’d bounce back as good as ever. It seems like daily we are finding out just how wrong that perception was.
I wonder if the guy who hit him will be charged with murder?
(UPDATE:
Mike Russo of the Star Tribune reports that the Boogaard family will donate his brain to the Boston University researchers who study brain disease in athletes.
Larry Brooks of the NY Post Tweeted that Boogaard was receiving counseling in the NHL/PA Behavorial Health/Substance Abuse Program at the time of his death.)
Hockey Ping!
Boogaard died of alcohol, painkiller mix
