Holy smokes -- this is stunning news.

He was nicknamed "the Boogie-Man," and was known for his enormous size for a hockey player (6'7", 270 lb.) and his reputation as an intimidating enforcer.

I can't imagine what could have caused this. I sure hope it had nothing to do with head injuries or anything of that sort.

At his size I would suspect a heart attack.

What I did know is that Mike Russo, the Strib's hockey writer, basically lives with the Wild for nine months a year and he swore by Boogaard as a guy. According to Russo's report in today's Strib, Boogaard was awaiting a visit from his brother, a Royal Canadian Mountie. And it sounds as if that brother found Derek dead.
