DALLAS Dallas will keep $2,000 found by a teenager in a parking lot last February.
The money will go into the city's general fund not back to Plano high school student Ashley Donaldson, who found the cash in an envelope at the Pavillion Shopping Center in North Dallas.
"I don't regret making the decision I did," she said. "I feel proud of myself for giving the money back. It's one of the biggest decisions of my life."
The 15-year-old Shepton High School student spotted the money on the ground and took it to a nearby Chase Bank.
Over the last three months, the bank and Dallas police have tried to find the owner, but have had no luck.
On Tuesday, police said under a new city policy, the unclaimed money will go into Dallas' general fund not back to the person who found it, as in years past.
"We appreciate your honesty," said Dallas police spokesman Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse. "We're going to put the money to good use. It's not going to be wasted, but put to good use for the City of Dallas."
That's not the answer Ashley Donaldson had been hoping for. "I was thinking about a car," she confessed.

Uh, no.
“No good deed goes unpunished”
I am not suprised. A friend of mine found a large diamond ring in the Atlanta Airport and turned it over to the cops. THey said to contact them after a certain amount of time passed if the owner didn’t claim it. She had paperwork, etc. She ran ads and everything. When she started contacting the police dept. to get the ring, they avoided her and would not return her calls. They finally said “We don’t have it. It was auctioned off along with other lost and found or confiscated items.” Period.
It's not his or the City of Dallas money!
What right do the cops have to it?
(Note to self...give found money to charity before greedy government union stooges confiscate it.)
Its not stealing finders property if the cops do it. Its... its... a new policy. Yeah, that's it - just claim that policy trumps property rights, and trust that the amount is too small to be sued over by a naive teenager.
So all it takes to rip off an honest kid is several hundred plice with guns, backed up by lawyers and a city council. Way to go, Dallas!
Welcome to the real world, kid - remember what they did to you, and how they justified it, and it will enable you to protect your money in the future.
The government in it’s many forms and agencies is not your friend. They are not among us to protect us, protect our assets, or our rights. With minor exception, their constant presence is to collect from our public treasury each week, and to lobby for the continuation of such.
If it is going to be put in to the 'General Fund' of the City then I can assure you it WILL be wasted.
Donut fund, most likely. The money should last about one shift.
“Hey kid, you owe us $3,000”.
BS... it should be finders keepers if no one claims it.
Cpl Kevin Janse isn't a policy maker. He's just the spokesman for DPD. He's told what to say whether he agrees with it or not.
Now Miss Ashley, imagine! In a few years, it will be money you’ve worked hard for that they will take!
It was probably drug money. If I found a wallet with ID and cash inside I would contact the owner. If I find cash in a brown paper bag I will look around and if nobody is looking....yipee!
Even if the loser turns up to claim the money, they are expected to reward the finder for about 10% of the sum involved.
I dropped a fanny pack once when riding a bike. I called my wife to check the route and the nearest police box where it had, indeed, been turned in. They wouldn't let her claim it because there was about $40 in cash inside. They did give me the phone number for the finder and I called to thank her. She wasn't interested in the traditional $4 reward, but the police still insisted I had to go to the big police station (which involved taking time off work) to pick up the claim. They actually had a detailed check list of everything in the fanny pack which I had to verify before taking it back.
This was so the cops couldn't be accused of skimming. Some months later, I found a wallet. I did the guy a favor by NOT turning it in. I contacted him and arranged for him to call me when he came to the local Dai-Ei where I handed it over.
The old policy encouraged honesty. If the true owner showed up, he got the lost item back. If not, then the finder got a reward for being honest.
Well, well all know that politicians don’t give a damn about honesty these days.
You might say that they never did. Machine politics has been around for a long time. But even the Mafia was more honest and morally responsible then the corrupt leftists in charge these days.
All they have to say is “It’s social justice, or it will be well spent,” and they can be just as corrupt as they please.
No, it's finder's keepers and everyone now is going to keep whatever property they find, instead of going through the effort to 'do the right thing'.
If she simply kept the money; she would be $2,000 richer. By being honest; she was essentially robbed of $2,000.
I submit that the idiots at the Dallas Police Dept, will have cost the citizens of Dallas far more harm than whatever possible good they could have gotten from that money. They have undermined the trust and goodwill a law-abiding citizen should feel about the police department. I submit that $200 Million in goodwill will not repair the damage these idiots have done over $2,000.
Give the girl the money. She deserves it.
No way the city of Dallas deserves it.
There is stupidity in Texas just like other states.
Even in San Francisco they would probably give the money
back. Actually I take that back they would probably give it
to the criminal illigal alien defense fund. :-)
