President 'slept on it' as tense military chiefs awaited decision Action started the next morning when Obama declared 'it's a go' Mission delayed by one day after heavy cloud cover on Saturday night Navy seals dodged Pakistani security to reach Bin Laden's lair Outpouring of emotion on streets down to 'the same sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11' Obama told members of Congress
Barack Obama kept military commanders hanging by declaring he would 'sleep on it' before taking 16 hours to give the go-ahead to raid Bin Laden's compound.
Hit squads of specialist Navy Seals - who were not even told who they were preparing to capture - had practised the mission at two reconstructions of the terror chiefs sprawling compound. The mission looked set to be given the all clear last Thursday when analysts confirmed beyond doubt that Bin Laden was in busy town of Abbottabad in northern Pakistan.
But the president stunned officials when he told a national security meeting that he wanted more time to think - and disappeared out of the room. 'I'm not going to tell you what my decision is now - I'm going to go back and think about it some more,' said Obama, according to the New York Times. He then added 'I'm going to make a decision soon.' The head of the CIA and other senior intelligence officers who were keen to proceed were left tense as they waited for the president's decision. But the next morning after 16 hours, Obama summoned four top aides to the White House Diplomatic Room. Before they could speak, the president put his fist on the table and declared 'It's a go'.
With those three words, the greatest military operation in recent history began. Had it not been for heavy cloud cover

Makes Leon Panetta look good.
Let’s see....that would be Clinton....
Wow. Even then-VP Al Gore, speaking about a much less prominent terrorist than bin Laden, took about 2 seconds to recommend (to Clinton, who was asking Gore’s input) approving an “extraordinary rendition.” “Gore laughed and said, “That’s a no-brainer. Of course it’s a violation of international law, that’s why it’s a covert action. The guy is a terrorist. Go grab his ass.” (Against All Enemies pp. 143-144)
Would that be that ‘Ulsterman’ (sp?)
That 3:00 am phone call in Hillary’s commercial? Obama left orders that he should not be disturbed when he’s sleeping . . . or for that matter while he’s playing golf once he gets up.
He found out they believe they may have located Bin Laden August of 2010. They should have gone in the next day.
Obama looked SOOOO pained to announce that Osama was dead.
He didn’t seem proud or happy about it in the least. He was mournful, if anything.
That would be he....
No, even if the order was to kill bin laden regardless of his actions, such an outcome still would be completely within the rules of land warfare. A criminal/terrorist has no right to any protections. They are able to be killed with predjudice. The only caveat would to be capture for intell exploitation, but then again, I think several three lettered US entities (DIA, CIA, NSA, etc) have been watching/listening for sometime...
There is no due process for such persons, nor should there be.
Regards;
I can tell you that he delayed because he was looking for a way not to go through with this.
In reality, he had no choice.
The same thing will happen again, and the circumstances will dictate the only response.
This is why the USA can tolerate and survive a tyrant or incompetent in office for four years.
Hey, back off, he had a correspondent’s dinner to attend!
I hope the SEALS demanded a get out of jail free letter before they went in.
Hillary doesn’t look bad for being the first to back Panetta either.
Before they could speak, the president put his fist on the table and declared ‘It’s a go’.
...did he use the same fist that was holding his ice cream cone?
>>newsflavor has the real story, it keeps getting banned here.<<
So did the Socyberty one.
Pretty absurd. The search for OBL has been ongoing for more than nine years. No president should have to make up his mind about anything once his military and intelligence people have said the time is right. Small chance a president is going to know of any factors not already considered, save maybe some domestic political consideration which should not be a consideration in a search of this duration.
