Scientists say they have found a way to turn body fat into a better type of fat that burns off calories and weight.
The US Johns Hopkins team made the breakthrough in rats but believe the same could be done in humans, offering the hope of a new way to treat obesity.
Modifying the expression of a protein linked to appetite not only reduced the animals' calorie intake and weight, but also transformed their fat composition.
"Bad" white fat became "good" brown fat, Cell Metabolism journal reports.
Brown fat is abundant in babies, which they use as a power source to generate body heat, expending calories at the same time.
But as we age our brown fat largely disappears and gets replaced by "bad" white fat, which typically sits as a spare tyre around the waist.
Experts have reasoned that stimulating the body to make more brown fat rather than white fat could be a helpful way to control weight and prevent obesity and its related health problems like type 2 diabetes.

Baby fat ping.
Maybe just issue a stationary bicycle (attached to a portable generator) to every large person in America and solve the energy and health care crises all at once!
[sarcasm/silliness alert]
PS I’d be the first one they issued anything “fat-burning” to.
I hate it when I am put in the same category as a rat
They turned Jerrold Nadler into Chris Christie?
“turn Nadler into Christie”
Heh, heh! That’s a good one, except the latter’s opponents already refer to him as “Governor Crisco”.
And I’m in no shape to judge either, but I’m at least smart enough not to appear on TV, where Gov. Huckabee is starting to darken the noon skies himself.
Oops - 4:00 pm. Time to hit the treadmill and dig some nasty ol’ FoxNews.
;^)
They turned Jerrold Nadler into Chris Christie?
Very clever post! :-)
...Because telling people to do 20-30 minutes of aerobic exercise before breakfast every day, hit the gym a few times a week, and reduce they’re caloric intake just doesn’t seem to work.
Julie Christie. Really strange.
Like... get out in da Sun and brown your fat???
ping
Where is the outrage?
Scientists deem brown fat is “good” and white fat is “bad”. That’s discrimination!
In other news, the NAPWP (National Association for the Promotion of White People) has initiated a class action lawsuit against every grocery store in America.
A spokesman explained, “We will no longer tolerate the intolerance on full display in every grocery store in the country. We demand an end to the use of the offensive name ‘CRACKER’ and insist all products be relabeled immediately.
For some people, it actually doesn’t work, believe it or don’t.
Human metabolism and endocrinology are very complicated issues, and they are not broad-brush topics.
Spoken like a truly blessed person with high metabolism. I began in earnest trying to lose weight 4 years ago. I cut out milk, mayonaisse, fried food, never eat chips, and ice cream.....just things I didn’t need. I have walked 4 miles a day, 4 days a week, and lift weights for an hour the other three days. I work in construction. The number of pounds lost......0. I am not morbidly obese, but dang close according to the BMI. Some people just are blessed, others truly cannot help it. Twenty years ago, I could lose 3 pounds a week with ease, and would do so every spring when softball practice started up. I would get up to around 190 in the winter, then slim down to 165 in the summer. Now I can hardly stay at 200 pounds. Age and quitting smoking has a lot to do with it. Personally, I think the trend of more people being obese, has a lot to do with the cessation of smoking.
The researchers are hopeful that it may be possible to achieve the same effect in people by injecting brown fat stem cells under the skin to burn white fat and stimulate weight loss.Knockdown of NPY Expression in the Dorsomedial Hypothalamus Promotes Development of Brown Adipocytes and Prevents Diet-Induced Obesity
They used RNA interference via an adeno-associated virus to reduce the amount of neuropeptide Y, NPY.
An earlier article about creating induced pluripotent stem cells used another method other than adeno-associated virus. It may be needless to say, but they are leery of using adeno-associated virus in humans.
A combined ping, FReepmail me if you want on or off the stem cell or diabetes ping lists.
First time I’ve heard of a dude with that problem. Usually it’s us wimmins! Kidding aside, you had any kind of hormones/thyroid workup recently?
Smoking cessation and ageing do make it harder to lose weight, but they shouldn’t bring it to a standstill.
For your workout routine you mention walking & lifting weights, but no aerobics. By adding a single lightweight dumbbell to your walk, you can screw up your breathing enough to make it aerobic, without adding stress to your joints. Just keep the weight moving, for instance by passing off from one hand to the other as it orbits around your waistline, while walking at your normal pace. Or holding the weight out/fwd at shoulder height while doing wrist rotations. I only used a 3-lb dumbbell myself, as the kinetic energy involved was all that was needed.
Some yoga classes focus on strength, some on balance. I dunno which is best or if it even makes a difference, but I do recommend them. For sure it’ll strengthen your trunk muscles without impact to your joints. Believe you me, yoga ain’t for sissies!
After losing my job I had to give up the YMCA membership, but I miss the pool the most. Again, no joint impact plus no overheating no matter how strenuous the exercise!
Ever tried the “Caveman Diet”....seriously....my doc (VERY Reputable, AND a Naturapath, also) recommended it to me....PEOPLE are DIFFERENT.
