What is it about pizza that makes us love it so much? Is it the savory cheeses, the pliable crust or the aromatic sauce? Perhaps it's the customizable nature of the treat. Each pizza is different; across the country -- the world, even -- foodies get to compliment their pies with the toppings they most love. You can call it an Italian creation, an American staple or even a Brazilian standby, but one thing's for sure: we all crave pizza. But where should you expect to taste the best slice?

Alright, lots of comments from people who think they’ve had good pizza. You haven’t...unless you’ve eaten Di Fara’s pizza in Brooklyn. Grimaldi’s is a close, but uneven, second, depending who’s making them that day. The Master, Dom Di Fara, is on his feet all day, every day, making perfect pizza. Until you’ve had one from Di Fara’s, you don’t know pizza...period.
Ditto that. Loved Godfather’s pizza.
We had that once a week too. One of the few things my mother would make. We had a 7 day a week menu. lol
We normally hate thick crust but found one we love. The place is called Famuari’s in Summerville SC.
I saw Di Fara’s on a food/travel show a couple weeks back. I gotta admit, that pie looked darn good! I especially liked how the guy running the place (Dom, I would assume?) snipped a big handful of fresh basil on top to finish.
$30 a pie is a little steep for my current budget, but for quality like that I’d definitely give it a go.
I actually have had Jack’s. I had it when I was visiting my aunt (who then lived in Indianapolis) when I was a little kid, many moons ago. Large sausage and mushroom - yum!
I know what you mean. Sometimes it’s the memories that come with a particular meal that make it so wonderful.
There’s a couple of dishes my mom used to make when I was little that were obviously ways to feed a big Catholic family on a very limited budget. One was a tasty macaroni dish with tomatoes, onion, and just a bit of bacon. We ate it and liked it then because we had to; I eat it and like it now to remember where I came from and to honor all the hard work and love my mother put into raising us kids.
Pizza is like Chilli. Everyone has their idea of what it should be...so to each their own! All the places which made my all-time favorites are out of business.
Star PIzza in Houston, TX is the absolute best pizza.
For those of us transplants from the midwest, STAR Pizza is a comfort, especially when they have fresh new St Arnolds brew on tap.
My wife and I like to go to Savannah as our little “get away” place. A few stops are requirements for each visit, especially “Vinnie Van Go-Go’s” in the City Market.
To me pizza is like sex- it’s ALL good when you’re having it.
Since I grew up in the Chicago area, I prefer the pizza from that area (both deep dish and thin crust). I moved to Orlando a few years ago, and they have New York style pizza here, which I can barely tolerate.
Gino's East is also very good.
Moose’s Tooth - Anchorage, Alaska
Barry’s Pizza - Houston, Texas
Sally’s or Pepe’s - Wooster Street, New Haven CT is pretty much the Gold Standard for real pizza. The bonus is that Libby’s is right down the street. The best Italian pastries and ices. It’s a shame that most of you will never know what you’re missing...
Da Michele on Via Sersale, 13 Tel +390815539204. Website here.
Try this in Naples before you leave.
Their goat cheese is wonderful.
Yep, the one on Menaul closed some years back. I currently get my pizza from Giovanni’s on San Pedro.
Being in the south I’ve never had the pleasure of NY pizza. The best I’ve found is to buy a dough from a local mom/pop place and make it fresh using indirect heat on a gas grill.
My hometown has the best pizza. YONKERS NY!
