8 Grocery Store Products that are Better than Homemade, really
Yahoo/Bon Appetit ^ | 4/17/11 | n/a

Usually, the imitation, short-cut, version just doesn’t hold a candle to the original. Consider: Spray tans. Toupees. Press-On Nails. But when it comes to food, most of us don’t have the time to make everything from scratch. So over the years I’ve scoured grocery store shelves for pre-made foods that taste as good as homemade (almost). There are not many. But when I do find a winner, I am instantly hooked. And, while it would probably be more prudent for my culinary street cred to keep my finds to myself, these products are so good, I can't help but overshare.

Do these store-bought foods give the made-from-scratch versions a run for their money? You bet your clip-in hair extensions...

I use a splatter screen over my pot when making my sauce.

We did too, but found it about as effective as using it for bacon. Maybe we need a lot smaller mesh size.

"Maybe we need a lot smaller mesh size."

Mine is a very fine mesh.

” A friend bought me an 8 can pack and told me to try it.”

Frozen? Ewwwwwwww!

I guess Gold Star would be ok over rice except I only like sticky rice or Spanish fried rice.

Aldi’s has a frozen chicken pot pie that is remarkably tasty, even when prepared in the microwave. And it’s $6 for four, not $4 for one.

“I like Skyline over Goldstar. Ever had a Skyline deluxe burrito? The best.”

I lived in Cincinnati for 30 years (FL now) and tried Skyline a couple of times. I actually got started with Empress but eventually ended up with Gold Star.

Never had a Skyline deluxe burrito and probably never will.

My wife sometimes makes a pumpkin chiffon pie similar, if not identical, to this one: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Pumpkin-Chiffon-Pie-I/Detail.aspx
I like a nice pumpkin custard pie as well as the next guy, but a pie that has most of the flavor and is a little lighter after stuffing myself with turkey and all of the fixings is kind of appealing.

I make my own Pizza dough and it is way better than any premade dough.

The key to good dough is patients. You can not rush the steps.

Besides I only use honey in the dough instead of sugar to activate the yeast. Something about it makes the dough just exquisite. A real simple and fun thing to do is to make your own pizza at home with the family. It is cheap and the kids love it. I estimate that I make three pizzas for way less than $5 total.

My Pasta sauce is pretty darn good too, fresh from the garden tomatoes. The idea of spending $9 on a jar of pasta sauce is STUPID.

That is the truth. It is very good, but Prego is good and allot less messy!

I agree with the Simply Lemonade. That stuff is fantastic! So is the Simply Limeade.

My fave is Trader Joe's Gyoza (pot stickers.) Safeway makes good ones too. I would never attempt to make those myself. I serve them with homemade fried rice. TJ's are $3.59 for a bag, enough for 4 of us.

BKF is incredibly versatile. I had never heard of it until I got some All-Clad pans and they recommended it to clean them.

Oven cleaner is far less work.

"I’ve yet to have a good homemade can of Spam."

Easy! Place 1 pound of pre-cooked pork byproducts, including lips, jowls, and A-holes, in a blender. Add 1 package unflavored jello and 3 shakers of salt stolen from Wendy's. Blend well. Pour into well-greased mini Velveeta cardboard bottom. Chill. Once set and congealed, slice and eat. If in Hawaii, fry in bacon fat, place on mound of rice, and pour gravy until covered. Top with fried egg and eat with chopsticks.

I actually fooled my Italian ex-MIL with Prego, in a lasagna. I even used the non-boil pasta. She was pissed. I was very satisfied.

Had them and hated them. Too much sauce, not enough meat. Decent price but I have had better.
