Scottish butcher lays claim to 'the world's hottest sausage'

The "Devil's Sausage" is so hot its creators at Rendalls Quality Butchers in Raploch, Stirling, must wear gloves and goggles to make them. And they said yesterday they won't sell the spicy snacks to young children or people with a heart condition.

The delicacy - which contains pork, sweet chili, jalapenos and the so-called "ghost pepper" Bhut Jolokia, one of the hottest peppers in the world - is said to be more than 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce.

Butcher brothers Jason and Garry Rendall, whose previous creations include a Buckfast pie, say they have sold hundreds.

Jason, 28, said locals were competing to see who could manage a whole one. He said: "The look on people's faces is priceless. Big tough guys say 'I'll have one, no problem, I love hot food', but after biting into their roll and sausage their expression soon changes and they're reaching for a drink. They can't handle it. "Word has spread so fast we're struggling to keep up.

"Obviously I've tried them but even I wouldn't eat a full threesausage roll. I'm racing to the sink for water after a single bite.

"We warn people 'eat the devil's sausage at your own risk'."

Well, I am only a spectator. I have never understood the desire that some humans have, to consume fire.

Many years ago, I and 3 big, tough Soviet sailors and one other American (translator) crammed into a booth. On the dinner table were some condiments including a bottle of jalepeno sauce. One man in the middle of our group asked what was in the bottle. The translator explained it was hot sauce. The sailor bragged that he loved hot sauce and could drink it straight. The translator warned him not to as the sailor opened the bottle and tipped back his head. Shock registered on the sailor’s face - he looked wildly at those of us seated around him - he wanted to run from the booth but we were blocking him in. The translator grabbed a bottle of honey from the condiments and handed it to the sailor. The suffering man, still wild eyed, looked incredulously at the litte plastic bear he had just been handed (they don’t sell honey in plastic bears in the Soviet Union so for a moment he thought he had been handed a toy). As soon as he heard the translator say ‘it’s honey’ he forcibly tore the entire head off the plastic bear (bottle) and tipped his head back, gulping honey as fast as he could as we scrambled to get him something to drink. Ah...good times....good times....

I like hot, spicy food now and then ... but there is such a thing as “too hot”.

Sweating, watery eyes, pain so bad you think blisters must be forming, drinking and drinking and drinking trying to get it to stop, and ultimately longing for the sweet embrace of death to end your suffering ... that’s “too hot” ... although some people seem to think that’s just hot enough.

Scotsmen should stick to distilling Laphroaig and that is a blessing by itself.

Now that's a sausage I'd love to get, especially with it containing Bhut Jolokia peppers. Some folks don't understand us connoisseurs of spicy stuff, I suppose, but I love it. When I go to a Thai restaurant I always ask for Thai Hot instead of American Hot.

As my family doctor once explained to me, spicy food will not harm your stomach. It may upset it for awhile but no permanent damage will be done.

I don't know about that, but this stuff is pretty fierce.

Yep, that red rooster sauce is pretty powerful stuff. Never encountered it outside Thai and Vietnamese places. I love hot foods and have to put that on the side so I can have a controlled burn, lol.

I'd actually understood hot, spicy foods to help kill off the bacteria that causes most ulcers. So, far from it causing ulcers, it's sort of protective. If you already have an ulcer and don't know, it'll announce itself very clearly though.
