The article goes on to say:
Climate modelers have long known that households are far bigger contributors to global warming than most laypeople realize. For all the blame tailpipe emissions take for escalating temperatures, homes and office buildings are actually the single largest contributor to greenhouse gasses. One key reason is the 100-plus million refrigerators in Americas 111 million households. According to the Department of Energy, the standard fridge sucks up about 8% of the electricity used by all homesa pretty big share given the dozens of big and small appliances and electronics that are also drawing juice.
Forget climate modelers, lets look at some real data.
On the other side of the energy and emissions issue, we have this recently released (March2011) report from the US Energy Information Administration (PDF)
Total U.S. anthropogenic (human-caused) greenhouse gas emissions in 2009 were 5.8 percent below the 2008 total (Table 1). The decline in total emissionsfrom 6,983 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e) in 2008 to 6,576 MMTCO2e in 2009was the largest since emissions have been tracked over the 1990-2009 time frame. It was largely the result of a 419-MMTCO2e drop in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (7.1 percent).
Have a look at CO2 emissions graphically, by energy sector this is from the EIA report:
Now lets look at CO2 emissions by industrial fuel, still falling fast.
Now heres the kicker. World Climate Report took the EIA data for total CO2 emissions from the USA, and graphed it against the CO2 emission data for the same period from China:
Figure 1. Annual carbon dioxide emissions from the United States (blue) and China (red), 1990-2009 (data source, EIA).
And these morons at Time magazine are worried about the few extra watts of electrcity used in my electric ice maker and trying to make me feel guilty about it?
I cant print what Id like to say.
UPDATE: Some commenters asked about employment -vs-CO2, heres a graph that is a close proxy for employment, per capita income -vs- CO2.
We don’t like the taste of the ice from the maker and I don’t like the noise. Nothing altruistic about it, unfortunately. What amazes me is how they come up with more and more stuff to make people feel guilty over. I REFUSE to feel guilty for living comfortably and using more then 2 squares!!!
Why not get rid of refrigerators altogether.
Then we can drive to the grocery store every day to buy fresh food.
Yeah, that will solve the energy ‘crisis’.
BTW, I used to repair icemakers, several brands but in particular the one that makes crescent cubes and had a sweep arm. Very popular.
The motor does not, as the article states, have a heater. There is a heater in the mold to loosen the cubes but it is on less than 5 min. every harvest cycle. The cycles is usually about 2 hours apart. Depends on the freezer temperature.
I just keep my bottle of Vodka in the freezer.
GOOD on you and with summer coming on, you’ll use it even more often!
Can’t be...mine hasn’t worked for years. :)
Hey greenies.....
Save the planet, Kill yourselves!
That's right: the only way to really lower CO2 emissions, as far as I know, is to cause a recession.
Do you want a terrific example of a low-carbon economy? Go visit Haiti sometime.
Global Warming on Free Republic
I you only want fresh ice, you can dump the pan that holds the cubes once or twice a week (wasteful I know). Then you could use the thingy on the door that dumps ice right in your glass. It certainly is nice to get ice than way.
“I believe I read just yesterday that there is a tremendous amount of carbon dioxide released by composting. I dont know what they are going to do with that one.”
I LOVE IT! EnviroWeenies annoy the cr@p outta me, LOL!
How can you "know" something when it's based on a premise that's unproven, and most likely false?
I feel SORTA guilty these nimrods still have a job, and I'm not sure why, I never buy their moronic rag.
They won’t be happy until we are all using leaves to wipe our butts.
All non-facts verified to be true and consensusy by man-bear-pig and the Carbon Credit Profiteers
And even then it's not on for 5 minutes every two hours 24/7/365. There's an ice tray and when it gets full, the arm comes down and rests on the ice and doesn't harvest any more till you use some. So if one shot is 12 cubes say, then the heater will run every time you use 12 cubes and it needs to replace them. If you use 12 cubes a day, it runs 5 minutes a day and waits the rest of the time for you to use some.
I like my cast iron coal-powered ice maker made in the Ukraine in 1939. Its a создатель льда угля brand. If you go outside when its on, you have to wear a mask because the smoke is so bad. Its totally worth it though. Theres no ice like Soviet-style ice.
“I just keep my bottle of Vodka in the freezer.”
Me, too. Summer’s comin’! I like to take a fresh bottle, have a few nips off of it, then cut a fresh cucumber from the garden into spears, and add that to the bottle. It makes the most awesome flavored vody for Bloodies and Tonics in the summer months.
I’ll have to try that! Sounds tasty! Too strong a flavor for shots?
Pass a law against leaf shedding.
Then arrest the trees for violating the law.
