The article goes on to say:
Climate modelers have long known that households are far bigger contributors to global warming than most laypeople realize. For all the blame tailpipe emissions take for escalating temperatures, homes and office buildings are actually the single largest contributor to greenhouse gasses. One key reason is the 100-plus million refrigerators in Americas 111 million households. According to the Department of Energy, the standard fridge sucks up about 8% of the electricity used by all homesa pretty big share given the dozens of big and small appliances and electronics that are also drawing juice.
Forget climate modelers, lets look at some real data.
On the other side of the energy and emissions issue, we have this recently released (March2011) report from the US Energy Information Administration (PDF)
Total U.S. anthropogenic (human-caused) greenhouse gas emissions in 2009 were 5.8 percent below the 2008 total (Table 1). The decline in total emissionsfrom 6,983 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e) in 2008 to 6,576 MMTCO2e in 2009was the largest since emissions have been tracked over the 1990-2009 time frame. It was largely the result of a 419-MMTCO2e drop in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (7.1 percent).
Have a look at CO2 emissions graphically, by energy sector this is from the EIA report:
Now lets look at CO2 emissions by industrial fuel, still falling fast.
Now heres the kicker. World Climate Report took the EIA data for total CO2 emissions from the USA, and graphed it against the CO2 emission data for the same period from China:
Figure 1. Annual carbon dioxide emissions from the United States (blue) and China (red), 1990-2009 (data source, EIA).
And these morons at Time magazine are worried about the few extra watts of electrcity used in my electric ice maker and trying to make me feel guilty about it?
I cant print what Id like to say.
UPDATE: Some commenters asked about employment -vs-CO2, heres a graph that is a close proxy for employment, per capita income -vs- CO2.
Any kind of decomposition releases lots of CO2. So the real problem is rotting leaves that fall off trees. If the trees would keep their leaves, or if we had fewer trees, we would have less CO2.
Will someone tell the trees? I’m busy.
You can get a scotsman brand ice maker. It will make ice like sonics. But it is really expensive.
I never bothered to get mine tapped into a water supply, just one more thing to go wrong and need fixing. If I want ice, I make it the old fashioned way.
I remember when Rush would have the background audio of turbo chainsaws revving up when he would do the "save the redwoods" alerts
ping
Also, it makes me happy to know that I am helping, in a small way, to replace the world's ice lost to global warming. (sarc)
What do these wackos want? A return to non-electric ice boxes? Horses and buggies? Outhouses with no toilet paper? No running water in houses? Even then, they would probably still find something to b!tch about.
I'm stockpiling ice for all the iced tea that Algore's limo drivers will need to avoid heat stroke while waiting outside the idling, air-conditioned cars, standing ready to whip open the doors immediately for Senor CapnTrade at the conclusion of his speech excoriating the internal combustion engine and refrigerators.
I was thinking cheap! LOL!
I use mine to make sweet tea w/my iced tea maker at least 2-3 times a week. Just doing my part to make a liberal have a brain hemmorage.
That's methane. To get CO2 you have to burn it at the wellhead, so to speak. I suppose someone will come up with a strap on solar powered ignitor, but the cattle are probably going to stampede...
From my cold dead hands!
If you buy this crap and don’t want to use it, that ice maker does have an off switch.
Don’t you just love the chart of China ramping up their CO2 emissions?
Those who tout we need to reduce the population, but go on breathing, thus placing the onus on others to do the dirty work for them, should be first in line.
I'll bet the first thing will some sort of fine or tax. Anything to keep them from looking for or having to keep a job. Once they strap on the government feed bag, no other diet is palatable. Wealth re distribution can come wearing many different and varied hats.
Well, then I am in big trouble. If that is a fact, what are the EV nuts going to do about natural composting?
I don’t have an ice maker and when the ex cleaned me out she even took the ice cube trays.
Since I drink my wiskey neat, I am owed carbon credits.
lol, I don’t have one of those. cant blame me
