Good morning gardeners. Today is NOT tax day! Y’all who file last minute can put it off until Monday the 18th. Why? In 2011, Washington, D.C., will celebrate Emancipation Day on April 15, a day earlier than normal, since April 16 falls on a Saturday. Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the day that President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act. The Act, which was "for the release of certain persons held to service or labor in the District of Columbia," freed 3,100 slaves in the District, making DC residents the "first freed" by the federal government.
Ok back to gardening. Looks like I will be getting rain today. There is a line of strong thunderstorms to the northwest and west of me. I had planed to rent a tiller today and till the garden plot. I will have to wait until the soil dries out now. Drats, another delay in planting! Some of my tomato and squash plants are begging me to get them in the soil. Received some nice seeds in the mail yesterday from Freeper Black Agnes. Thanks again. I should have the opportunity to get them into some soil and flats today!

Citizen has found it and phoned in location. Blown into a ditch. Rescue crews are trying to remove debris so they can get the children and bus out. Does not seem to be any injuries.
Just Damn! It looked like the major part of this storm front would miss this area. But this is an isolated T-Storm associated with the storm front!
Kids and I have already been in the bathroom huddled in the bathtub once today. Hopefully we can avoid it again. Boy, were they an unhappy lot!
Tomorrow is a better day to plant, anyways.
Looks like very red (on radar) t-storm is right on top of y’all right now.
Did I tell you I hate this kind of weather! A house I was in a few years ago got hit by a tornado night time no warnings of any kind from the weather people - very scary.

Okra is very tasty but you want to get it young.
Spears should not be much longer than your thumb.
They get tougher and slimer when they get too large.
Over cooking them makes them slimy.
You can batter them and deep fry them.
Okra and tomatoes is very tasty.
Put them in soups.
Hosta’s or astilbe.
Looks like that Storm Cell that was around your area about a half hour ago is on track to come through Meridian.

Yep! When preparing them, like slicing them into rounds, if your knife does not go through them like butter then you got a tough chew ahead of you if you decide to fry or sauté them.
I am very impressed with our local TV station. They have had their detailed weather radar on live for more than two hours straight. There is one young Lady weather reporter that is very knowledgeable and explains what we are seeing in detail!
You get them young and tender and they are tasty raw.
The problem is if you don’t check them every day those young tender pods seem to turn into 8 or 9 inchers over night! May as well put those in the compost pile!
You can say the same thing about oysters! Yummm!

wow, I just zoomed the radar in on your area. It really looks pretty bad there.
I have been on oyster boats in Alabama and Louisiana and eaten them as they were harvested! Nice and salty.
Were are about to have it all pass us in about 20- 30 min.
I agree with Justa! As I said on the other thread, I think that they were pulling the reporter’s leg. I guess, given the care, anybody can grow just about anything anywhere. Doesn’t mean it will be profitable, or very pretty. I just thought it was funny.
BTW, my daughter is a music teacher in a private school in VA. In a new twist on the curriculum, she gave her 8th graders an assignment to write a term paper on 3 styles of music with footnootes, resources, etc. She was grading papers at my house when my husband was in the hospital in Jan and she read one paper to me. (A lot of kids did not take this assignment seriously since their previous music teacher had expected very little from them.) An 8th grade boy wrote that “Jazz is a style of music that slaves developed while raising cotton outside of Chicago in the 1920s and 1930s.”
After we both picked ourselves up off of the floor from laughing, she wrote a comment and gave him a grade (not a very good one). But that kid got a higher grade than the ones in the class who copied their papers (at least 3) directly from Wikipedia.
Who knew about the slaves picking cotton in Chicacago in the 20th century?
Dined on some delicious Butter Crunch lettuce yesterday much more to come.
