AFP - On Tuesday, the world will be awash with talk of courage and vision as it looks back on 50 years of manned space flight, a trail blazed by Yuri Gagarin's 108-minute trip around the planet.

But what if the past half-century has been just a cosmic waste of money?

Presidents and space agencies insist manned missions will always be at the heart of their space programmes.

No men in space, no Tang!
Robots would never drink that stuff.
Second thought... people don’t need Tang either.

Fist bump for the firefly reference.
Unless we make the things from “Bladerunner” then humans will have to explore space.

When mile-high glaciers start rolling down from the north, we’re going to wish we had somewhere else to go.

Exactly. They area waste of Space for us as we will no longer be going there after the next shot.

The Space Station now belong to Russia. In fact if not legally.

A certain 11 year old boy, who will remain nameless, was praying for Moon Maidens. Got gray dust and rocks instead. In 1976 at 18 when there was a small chance of Amazonian Women on Mars, we get red dust and rocks. There is the slightest hope of finding those Green Orion Slave Girls, but at 50+, I’m ughhh, I mean that nameless boy is running out of time. Stop wasting my tax dollars and find something of real value.

“—descendants of earlier ‘manned missions’ to the Americas. I don’t think they sprouted from the ground there.”

Cynic. Of course they did. Just the right combination of unicorn manure and daisy petals fell into a magickal stone circle one spring day. Mother Gaia was so impressed she breathed the breath of life into it.

Just like a bucket of doomed crabbed headed for the boiling pot. When one starts to get out, the others are there to pull him back in and drag him down.

Were manned missions to the Americas a waste?

To hear the anti-Western Leftists tell it, YES. It lead to "nothing but the spread of disease, slavery, genocide, and exploitation."

I think the left ought to off themselves for the good of the planet, and to atone for their sins against Mother Gaia, don't you?

It would be interesting to see how (or if) our civilization survives the next ice age.

Seems like a good excuse to shove Yuri Gagarin down kids throats for the next 50 years, doesn’t it?
