Good morning gardeners. I hope things are going well for all the gardeners. My seedling trays are over flowing with growth. I have heirloom tomatoes, Marion and Arkansas Travelers ready for repotting. Paste tomatoes and squash were repotted a few days ago. I Also have a few types of flowers also doing well. I will plant some hot peppers in my garden also. Hot peppers have always done well for me. Sweet Bell peppers I have always had problems growing but will try them once again.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

You and The First Wife have quite the operation going there tubebender!

Well I forgot to tell you that we are waiting for the earthquake of the millennium which happens every 200 years and the last one was 1799.

If that happens, you and TFW will be the most valuable commodities on the block....You will be some of the few who know how to cook and handle real food.

Hi fanfan.

I think my husband may build a greenhouse soon.

I have plants and seedlings started all over the house — including one of the three bathrooms.

The 3 car garage has the Tractor, ATV, a big SUV AND my trees and bushes in gallon, 5 gallon pots.

Only the Colorado Blue Spruces are in pots outside, waiting for transplanting.

I am heading to Home Depot tomorrow and will check if they have the coir cubes! The closest one is about 80 miles away but they have the only water heater that will fit where my over 25 yr old one resides now. Wish me luck on both!

I have a serious question.
This stuff sounds like a wonder drug for soil.

Where does ‘Beats Peat’ come from, and what is it made from?

Other than the chemical analysis printed on the bag, is there any real info. available?

I guess I just worry that the Chi-Coms are trying to poison us.
It's not like they have a shortage of toxic sludge, and if they could find a way to incorporate it into something that acted like peat moss....

I need to go out for a while. I seem to be short on tin foil...

Hey Diana, I have a question about Algoflash. The instructions ay to use a cap full per gallon. But darn if that cap does not have a center part and two other areas that can be filled to make a cap full. What is the correct way to use? I hate to feed more than is required by flooding the whole cap with Algoflash>

Cotton is all well and good, but with food gardens we could attract raccoons for fur, and deer for meat.

A win-win!

You will be some of the few who know how to cook and handle real food.

That was pointed out to me when we were at Costco yesterday and I asked She Who Knows All what the precooked Flank Streak was about and the reply was 'it is for folks too busy texting and tweeting to lean to cook from scratch...

It sez on the package that it is 100% coconut coir, which is the shredded husk of a coconut. They used to just use ‘em for fuel but someone figured out how to weave the fiber into mats several years ago, and make liners for hanging baskets.

A lot of it comes out of Indonesia and Vietnam; anyplace that grows a lot of coconuts. I’ve discussed this with a couple of the people whom I trust down at the local garden center and they don’t know of any downside to this stuff. You don’t dig it out of a bog, so it takes a lot less effort to produce it than peatmoss, and coir is ph neutral.

The company has a website with a lot of really good information on this...

Ok y’all. Kohlrabi is *good*. Harvested some today before it got woody and/or bolted. Yummy. Makes a great stir fry addition too!

We will definitely grow this next fall and winter. Varieties were Kolibri(sp) and Kossak. IIRC the Kolibri was from Kitchen Garden Seeds and the Kossak was from Jungs. Both very yummy.

I’ve planted some regular ghost peppers and a ‘chocolate’ variety I found somewhereorother. So far I’ve had 4/5 of each germinate. We’ll see how many I manage to kill before I actually get ripe peppers.

I’m growing (as of last weekend) 50 varieties of tomatoes, 35 varieties of sweet peppers and 25+ varieties of hot peppers. Plus 6 varieties of eggplants. My kids love eggplants. We’ve had stuff going on at my house for the past couple months so pretty much everything has been at a standstill. But, hopefully we’ll get moving now. Planting squash, cucumbers and a couple varieties of winter melons this coming weekend. Transplanting the ‘sunshine blue’ blueberry my hubby acquired somewhere for me as well. Got my Sochi tea camellia in a ginormous pot this last weekend. I’m excited about getting my own fresh green tea!

I saw 2 HUGE rabbits in my backyard tonight. They were so huge that they couldn’t even run very well. Skinned they could have made 1/2 of a child’s coat, or 2 purses.

Un Hgh and I’ll bet the next thing you’ll try to tell us is that Prosser won his reelection for the Supreme Court of Wisconsin

Just got back from the closest Home Depot 170 mile round trip. While I was there I checked on the coir. They did not have any :(

Great! We’ll have to compare notes on the okra from Baker Creek. IIRC that’s the Vidrine’s Midget Cowhorn. I remember you had okra last year that was too tall and unweildy.

My kids love oven baked okra with cornmeal dusting. They would eat their weight in it if I had it. On that note, I’ve got 150 okra plants of various varieties started. Project this summer is dehydrated okra. Let’s all cross our fingers on this one.

All the squashes are c. moschata. They *will* cross with each other. So, practice safe squash sex to save seeds.

Not yet! :^( The Milwaukee vote is still not certified. Then, their plan seems to be to ask for a statewide manual recount in order to push the process into the time set aside for the recall elections. And it will soon be smack dab into the 2012 Presidential time. They (unions and Dems) are hoping to keep the Pubbies off base and off their stride. They don't care what it costs to do it.

I’ve always found that confusing, too...

I fill up the whole thing; I’ve always considered that a ‘cap full’ based on the shape of the cap.

That is what I have been doing also, using the whole cap!
