12-Year-Old Genius Expands Einstein's Theory of Relativity, Thinks He Can Prove It Wrong
Time Magazine ^ | March 29, 2011 | Michelle Castillo

Could Einstein's Theory of Relativity be a few mathematical equations away from being disproved? Jacob Barnett of Hamilton County, Ind., who is just weeks shy of his 13th birthday, thinks so. And, he's got the solutions to prove it.

Barnett, who has an IQ of 170, explained his expanded theory of relativity — in a YouTube video. His mother Kristine Barnett, who admittedly flunked math, did what every other mother would do if her genius son started talking mathematical gibberish. She told him to explain the whole thing slowly while she taped her son explaining his take on the theory.

While most of his mathematical genius goes over our heads, some professors at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey — you know, the U.S. academic homeroom for the likes of Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Kurt Gödel — have confirmed he's on the right track to coming up with something completely new. For now, they're encouraging Barnett to continue doing what he likes to do, which is explaining calculus using a whiteboard marker and his living room windows as seen in the video above.

“I'm impressed by his interest in physics and the amount that he has learned so far,” Institute for Advanced Study Professor Scott Tremaine wrote in an email to the family. “The theory that he's working on involves several of the toughest problems in astrophysics and theoretical physics.”

“Anyone who solves these will be in line for a Nobel Prize,” he added.

the light speed barrier is based on the assumption that light IS the barrier.

Bingo !

It is a hypothetical construct.

It's fixed speed is as well.

Watching liberals, I think IQ is a relative thing to vision that can grow or shrink.

Are you saying that liberals have I.Q.s ? :)

Then he'll have to stand in line behind Al Gore and B. Hussein Obama, the greatest geniuses of our time..........

Funny how gifts for math and physics seem to correlate with musical talent.

Funny how we close the music departments in our schools and consider them non-academic. We have few well qualified math and science teachers and many very qualified music teachers, then we close the music department and make the music teachers teach math and science. No wonder our scores in math and science are tanking.

I love music and learned to play by ear.

I tried that with piano but had to switch to my hands due to constant headaches..........

I can’t separate the media hype from the reality. What I’ve seen on YT of the kid only shows him explaining calculus. BFD. That’s not proving/disproving anything. He does have a different idea of how elements are created in stars, but he hasn’t developed the mathematical knowledge yet to work it out. If he has an idea that is radically different from Einstein’s, then he’ll have to work with a few other experts to determine an experiment that can prove it, like General Relativity predicted gravitational lensing and was proven true.

As far as breaking the speed of light, the key will be to better define gravity, since it is the only observable phenomena that appears to be instantaneous.

The Nobel prizes in **hard** science have not been cheapened a bit, only the ones for politicised soft subjects such as literature, "peace" and economic "science".

If this young chap does manage to solve any of these questions, he'd be right at the top of the list for the physics prize, and rightly so.

Music and mathematics are one and the same, hence one of the themes for “Close Encounters”.

BTW, are the buzzards back yet?

The National Institute of Standards and Technology demonstrated quantum entanglement in 2009. Einstein was spooked by it alright.

I call it another win for the holographic universe model

That’s the Peace Prize and its given out by a bunch of Norwegians who are freebasing smoked herring. Also there is NO Nobel Prize for mathematics, the equivalent would be the Field’s Medal.

It’s a matter of the constancy of light and the relative motion of everything else including the non-constancy of time.

Relativity is based on the Lorenz transformation which helps to mathematically bridge the concepts of classical physics and the discoveries in optics and electrodynamics. In theory according to the formula, one could exceed the speed of light, but things would get a bit complex.

At least, that’s my understanding. It’s fascinating stuff.

Good point... I suppose the liberal “abstract” noise making they call socialization (or whatever they talk about) does not derive any IQ test to apply to it.

I think one could create an isolated space time gun barrel like tube through which objects could go through from one end to the other faster than in our universe of “stringed jelly” through which light travels much like a vibration does through a plucked guitar string (where added energy does not increase speed but intensity or pitch). The object would have to be a pure particle and time would disappear.
