When the Cottonmouth Mocassins come out you know it's really Spring!
Something interesting to me was one of the cottonmouth’s reaction to being shot.
It was moving very slowly and did not seem to notice me at all. I shot it through the head with a .22 auto.
I noticed that as soon as it was hit, the snake struck at me in exactly the right direction. I was far enough away that I was in no danger but I thought it interesting that it sensed where the bullet came from.
The other two, I shot first with a .22 shot cartridge then finished them off with solids.
Beautiful as always, Swampsniper.
It was almost 80 today, got the AC running now.
My sign is Coral Snakes.
Thanks SWAMPSNIPER for the lovely pictures. Even the snake was pretty.
thanks, I need to learn how to do that. But you cut off his head!
TMMT, I would suggest a Taurus Judge or a .357 revolver with birdshot ( bb’s ) easier to carry when out on a nature walk or working in the garden...
SS, beautiful pic of the viper. That one almost looks like a copperhead...
Note to Southerners: red and yeller, kills a feller ( Coral.. Snake ); red and black friend of Jack ( King Snake )...
SS, All: I have seen dark Copperheads and light colored Mocs/Cottonmouths....Mocs are usually thicker and closer to water, but, this is not etched in stone...
Mocs will chase you... Copperheads stand their ground...
If you don’t have a firearm, carry a sharp hoe!
scroll right, it’s there .....enter what I did below on both sides of your pictures address and it will show up on screen...try it in the reply preview.....:o)

I saw him!
I saw one at my bridge this afternoon and two more in the water below. Time to start carrying when I go on my walks.
I was headed for the timbers to evaluate the situation today, and I was drawn away by the temptation of catching a few crappie. Caught 10 nice ones and got them cleaned and filleted. Fish fry in about an hour. Sweet potato fries, hushpuppies, cole slaw and a cold pasta salad.
“Thank goodness we only have rattlesnakes here!”
Actually, the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is larger and much more dangerous than all the rest in Florida! (Although the Coral Snake might be more deadly with neurotoxic venom - like a Cobra, but is small, relatively rare and has very short fangs.) Just received a Lakeland Ledger article from my sister about a Frostproof, FL man who got bit on the hand by a 6 ft, 11 in Diamondback on Feb 27th. He was picking up aluminum cans along the roadway and not paying attention. He was extremely lucky in that only one fang connected then broke off before he got a full load!

C’mon swampsniper, you gotta poke them moccasins with a stick and git ‘em to rear up and open dat cotton mouth!
They are a most impressive snake when they are lunging toward you, mouth wide open, cotton candy inside. It just screams DANGER!
LOL! OK, that’s funny right there.
I need to get some tomato plants tomorrow. And mow the lawn. And re-activate the sprinkler system. And spray the weeds in the zoysia in the back yard with some Image. And re-do the irrigation tubing in my raised herb garden planters. And put some fertilizer on the front lawn after I mow it. And . . . .
That's why we call them stumpys. My snake weapon of choice is a shotgun with a turkey load, lovingly referred to as my 'splat-o-matic', because nothing much left but mangled tissue. The copperheads we have around here are all light with such distinct patterns that they are gorgeous.
I got bitten by what turned out to be a brown water snake last year. He was in my mustard greens. I honestly thought it was venomous when I saw the pattern because I couldn't see his head and wasn't much in the mood to play around anyway. After I killed him, I felt really badly.
Ah, thanks! I’m an HTML dummy.
OK... I will put up with your snakes and gators but don't ever talk to me about AC in the middle of March again!!!!!
Flower, flower, flower, flower, flower, flower, SNAKE!
(That was just plain MEAN, LOL!) :)
