My son is enlisting in the Army. I am proud. I am scared. Forgive me if I have posted in the wrong forum.

You should be proud. He’s a man among men!

Others will say, “I would have joined the military but I had a bad knee or {fill in the blank.}” The truth is, they didn’t have the testicular fortitude to serve. Most never even spoke to a recruiter. It’s their excuse for their lack of courage.

God speed your son!

Best decision he will ever make. I am 24 years in the Navy and never regretted my decision. You should be extremely proud of your son. He will be fine and will become a man that you raised.

Congrats to you for having a brave, patriotic son and best of luck to him! Please thank him for me and get ready to be more proud than you ever thought possible. Scared comes with the territory also but he’s chosen to serve his country at a time of war and uncertainty, one of the most unselfish acts possible.

in my prayers.

But even if he is posted in Afghanistan, the mortality rate for our soldiers is low. Not zero, alas, but lower than previous wars.

I’ve never served, but it seems like the armed forces have a positive impact on the majority of young men and women. They get discipline, training, valuable team experience, “life” skills, and often lifelong friendships. Your son has made a fine choice for himself, particularly in these difficult economic times.

Congratulations to your son and to you. As a high school history teacher I always tell my students who enlist that I am proud of them and their decision to serve their country. He is joining the ranks of millions who have come before and will follow who have helped give us the freedoms that will enjoy.

It may help to look at things clinically: The odds are OVERWHELMINGLY in favor of your son getting thru the Army phase of his sojurn without so much as a scratch.

Congratulations. They will make a man out of him.

My son and his wife will retire from the army in six years. That is seven years before I will be able to retire.

It is ok to be scared. I was when my 21 y.o. enlisted in the Marine Corp. years ago. Part of me wanted to beat up the drill instructors when I heard what they had put him through. LOL

But, sitting in the cold wind on his graduation day, knowing he was one of the few to make it, made me proud. Yes, I was scared every day that he would be sent into combat (and maybe he had but couldn’t tell me) but I asked God to protect him and had to trust HIM to walk with my son on his chosen path. My son was lucky to get into the IT field and got classes that led him to the job he now holds today.

End of my rambling - now for a commercial break - I reside with a group at FR Canteen, whose sole purpose is to be there for the military and their family. If you so desire, you can “virtual cry” on our shoulder (kidding of course) there while your son begins his military career.

Thank you for letting your son go and thank him for his service.

Out of high school I went to college. I was not mature enough to be there on my own. It was one big party. I needed to learn discipline.

Dropped out of school (before being kicked out) and joined the Navy. Taught me the discipline I needed. Served for 20 years, retired, and for the last 13 years have worked supporting our fleet.

To paraphrase JFK, And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: I served in the United States Military.

Dear freelncer,
First of all, there is no “wrong” forum on Free Republic for a post like this. If anything, we share your pride and wish your son the very best. We honor the military here every single day. You are right to be proud, and your wanting to share it with us is an honor for US.
Second, you deserve a whole bunch of kudos yourself as a parent who has reared such a son.
May G-d bless you and your son. Thank you for sharing this with us and please keep us posted...in whichever forum you please.

I served in 2 different branches of the military but I don’t denigrate those who only served in one.
