How the War on Obesity Went Pear Shaped
spiked online ^ | March 15, 2011 | Patrick Basham and John Luik

Since the anti-obesity campaign is allegedly motivated by scientific findings, it would seem reasonable and prudent to make doubly sure that those claims are factual and trustworthy. Yet, we continue to find that the case against obesity is significantly flawed. Not only are the claims of an obesity epidemic often wildly exaggerated, but the science linking weight to unfavourable mortality outcomes is also frequently nonexistent or distorted.

1 out of every 3 women at my large corporation, are not just overweight... they are rotund and obese.

25 years ago you could go 30 days without seeing a 250 lb women. Go to any shopping center today, and it won't take 30 seconds. A 300 lb housewife buckling the stands at my niece's soccer games is commonplace. At 350 I rarely bat an eye. You'd expect a sense of shame, but instead find them strutting in miniskirts and knee high boots. At Wal Mart, when they asked me "paper or plastic?", I assumed it was for a barf bag. I'd venture to say in the last 25 years, the average weight of a housewife has doubled, if not more.

BMI appears to be linked to the bogus science of somatotyping that tried to establish superior/inferior standards on people by body composition.

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/553976/somatotype

And the BMI index tries to declare that men and women should both be of the same build.

I rarely see any women who are that overweight. Where do you live?

Whom do I believe, someone who claims that there is no obesity “epidemic” (obviously a metaphor), or my lyin’ eyes. The “epidemic” is real, but so is the agenda. So, we agree 50% ;-)

Yes indeed, the epidemic is quite real. My eyes tell me that as I wander around. There are fat people everywhere, it seems. I can remember going into a bank and every one of the tellers was way overweight.

What I see--and some of these people ought to be ashamed of themselves--keeps me in line. The OldPossum is 6'2" and weighs 187.

According to your profile you live in a "skinny" state.

When I moved from an industrial type neighborhood to a fairly exclusive one, something kept nagging me about the people on my block. I finally realized that it was that there were no fat women. None. There were a couple of pleasantly plump ones who would jog past early in the morning. They seemed to realize that there were hundreds of well formed young vixens who would do anything to have their lifestyle.

Thanks, MM. I thought that might be a factor in this, but I wasn’t sure.

Sorry, kruss, correlation does not prove causation. Brain shrinkage, dementia, and increasing weight are also linked with aging. As people age, their blood pressure, weight, and blood glucose rise, so what causes what? In fact, a recent study on mice was designed to determine which influenced insulin resistance more, diet/weight or age? The clear winner was age.

Perhaps we all need to stop aging. That would provide a cure for most ailments.

I don't remember how they determined the cutoffs with BMI, i.e. 25, 30, 35, 40. It probably has a U or J shaped mortality curve, i.e. very skinny and very fat have the highest mortality. Check this excerpt from Wikipedia on BMI

While the formula previously called the Quetelet Index for BMI dates to the 19th century, the new term "body mass index" for the ratio and its popularity date to a paper published in the July edition of 1972 in the Journal of Chronic Diseases by Ancel Keys, which found the BMI to be the best proxy for body fat percentage among ratios of weight and height;[3][4] the interest in measuring body fat being due to obesity becoming a discernible issue in prosperous Western societies. BMI was explicitly cited by Keys as being appropriate for population studies, and inappropriate for individual diagnosis. Nevertheless, due to its simplicity, it came to be widely used for individual diagnosis, despite its inappropriateness.

That said, if someone has high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes and they are overweight, avoiding stuffing your face and getting exercise could be very wise.

FReepmail me if you want on or off the diabetes ping list.

Both the diabetes and obesity epidemics are caused by the fanatical elimination of fat from our diets.

Eating fat causes satiety and prevents overeating.

The problem for our pancreases is that once the fat is removed from our food, in order to keep the food palatable, sugar is added in many forms.

This results in Type I and Type II diabetes, and weight gain follows.

You can thank the “center for science in the public interest,” those bastids.

You really do need to start thinking really hard. Chronological aging is a constant among ALL LIVING THINGS. If aging was the single underlying pathology of obesity we wouldn’t have obese children and all of the seniors would be morbidly obese.

Humans continue to gain weight because they become impaired in their abilities to oxidize fatty acids (intracellular iron loading). They eat to excess because they cannot complete the satiation feedback loop on amino acid absorption (tryptophan into the brain).

A freshman biology course at the local community college might point you in the right direction. I don’t suggest any further rantings in a public venue.

I think the insane amounts of Soy are not helping. Look in your cabinets and refrigerators and try to find 20 things without soy. Phytoestrogens right? I will not let the men in my household have a sliver of soy here, they get enough from eating out. Other countries that consume soy also consume seafood and sea products which may counter act the anti- thyroid effects.

There is not one molecule of the poison food, soy, in my home.

There may be some soy-based printers’ ink in the newspaper, but no food and no lecithin.

You can get all the lecithin you need from soft-boiled or over-medium eggs.

Are we related?, LOL. I can’t say 100% for sure but I do believe that the soda pop and candy bars of our childhood were made with sugar, not high fructose corn syrup. I believe that makes a world of difference.

My observations are that severely obese people die in their 40’s.

The obesity results in a basically sedentary life and the combination piles up resulting in death. The situation worsens if there is smoking.

Obesity really got, um, big, when Americans started to go nonfat. When people were preached that fat was bad, and carbs were good. Every nonfat product replaces fat with sugar or worse. They are poison, and all starchy carbs lead to fat. Most digestive problems come from grains. The stupid food pyramid says eat most of your food in the form of whole grains. It’s killing us.

We would all lose our fat, our celiac and irritable bowel issues, and enjoy our food and lives more if we give up all grains and beans. Period. And focus on organic veggies, fruits, dairy, and eat healthy animals: grass fed beef, free range, pastured chickens, wild caught fish. Cook in coconut oil, salad dressings with olive oil. Pastured butter. No other oils.

Fat is important for satiety, it tastes delicious, and our brains need it, it just has to be the right fat. The vegetable oils are rancid and poisonous.

Give up everything made from grains, and all sugary things except for dark chocolate and the occasional organic ice cream. It’s hard for only 4 days, and heaven for all the rest of your days. Which will be many!
