Where are the Nuclear Agencies on this? We need official Press Conferences on this situation - NOW.
Posted on 03/12/2011 5:24:20 AM PST by Scythian
The collective Nuclear Industry is massively failing the people they have so long sought to protect. There is no real, reliable, trustworthy news being reported on the situation in Japan except for vague and conflicting reports.
Where is the World Nuclear Association?
Where is the International Atomic Energy Group?
Where is the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission?
There should be press conferences on the situation in Japan, the people of the world should know all of the facts on the ground in "real time" because of the nature of the danger we are dealing with.
I am in favor of Nuclear Energy but if this is the way nuclear disasters are going to playout, that is, the general populace in the dark about the real danger then I am dead set against Nuclear Energy. These Nuclear Agencies should be out front on this (at least one of them). There are people in Japan that know exactly what is happening and the Nuclear Agencies should be out front with the information right now, in a press conference.
This is an epic failure on their part, in the future I suggest they be prepared and out front.

Scythian has worked him/herself into a frenzy...leaving hysterical comments all over FR. No point in talking reason.
Scythian...if you really want to work yourself into a panic find a copy of We Almost Lost Detroit by John Grant Fuller.

You really need to relax on this before you talk yourself into a stroke. Have some decaf and log off the internet for a while.
There is no “nuclear disaster” underway. There were some serious problems at several nuclear plants in Japan but there is absolutely no evidence that anyone is hiding anything.
Japan is only into its second day after suffering a major national disaster. Its unfortunate that they are not briefing you in detail right this second but I suspect they may have many conflicting priorities right now, like rescuing survivors.

I agree the PR could be better. There simply isn't a whole lot more information to give out. In this case, all the media can do is to trot out more talking heads about what might be going on, and then what the WORST CASE SCENERIO is. I totally expect Fox News to jump on that bandwagon.
I am still a proponent of nuclear energy. These are old power plants, old designs. Newer designs would have totally shut themselves off by now in this scenerio.
In general, the dangers of radiation are totally misunderstood by the public, and have been grossly overstated.

Where is the World Nuclear Association?
This is on their web site. Given that the situation is stiff in flux, they can't very well do much more than offer news reports.
Where is the International Atomic Energy Group?
They are also posting news stories and talking to Japanese officials. I'm not exactly sure what more you expect them to do. The Japanese have competent engineers and their people on the ground are likely doing everything possible. Remember it is their behind which ends up glowing if things go wrong.
Where is the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission?
Now this is certainly out of left field. Since when did the U.S. government have any jurisdiction over Japanese reactors? I mean this question doesn't make a lick of sense. However they do have a press release on the subject (pdf so I didn't link it) as they are watching the situation.
What I would say this situation demonstrates is the fact that future reactors should be based on
Pebble Bed Reactor Technology. A design which inherently limits the possibility of this kind of disaster just seems like a no-brainer to me.

There were plenty of folks here who went off the rails over the deepwater horizon explosion. All we can do is try to help them through it with education good info.
Scythian is a FReeper in good standing.
We’re a considerable distance from it and the Japanese handle this sort of thing better than anyone. Chernobyl became a disaster because the Russians failed to do the things Japan has already done. Russia didn’t even consider evacuations till it was way too late.
A good thing to do would be to find maps of the affected area around Chernobyl for a comparison. However this is nowhere near as bad as Chernobyl.

It is silly to fuss over “vanities” as if the MSM has somehow a higher reputation then we Freepers do. This was a reasonable post and question.

All sorts of fragmentary information and misinformation is floating around; that is common after disasters and near disasters. Situations tend to be minimized for public consumption by the various Departments of Public Reassurance and to be maximized by the various anti-whatever activists.
That said, I have found STRATFOR to be one of the best analytical sites around.

Here is something that otta really spin you out of control.
Read THIS book.
American Ground Zero: The Secret Nuclear War - CAROLE GALLAGHER
Back in the day people out here were prospecting for uranium. My uncle was one of them. Strike it rich. Lots of them would get all excited when the Geiger counter would go crazy.
They were merely detecting the fallout from our own bomb tests.
And there was/is A LOT OF IT.
How exciting is that?
There was talk of the Feds doing some cancer studies in the Lost Rivers area, right by the LOFT area. Many people dying of weird, uncommon cancers.
Nothing ever came of it.
Hmmm....I wonder why?

I agree Scythian is a Freeper in good standing. However, that does not grant him immunity from critiques of what he posts, and especially when he takes it from being a comment on another thread and creates a vanity with it. Plus, his posting history has a lot of stuff from enviro sites such as Natural News, a site that loves to spread enviro conspiracies.
This is a negative side effect of an industrialized society - the fact that something like this can happen. However, what is the alternative? Go back to the 1800s? With a life expectancy of 42 years? Every technological advance has a downside, but in almost all cases, the downside is far less than the upside that such an advance provides. But some folks love to dwell on the downside while taking for granted the upsides. The fact that we can even get this news in realtime and post it on FR and comment about it is one of those upsides. Syythian can go get potassium iodide if he is so concerned, he probably has about the same info that international agencies has at this point if Fox News is correct, he has been empowered by the technology that he doubts to take his own actions independent of any government agency.
