Contrary to Hollywood notions, the 40-year-old virgin is not an awkward yet funny and endearing electronics salesman played by Steve Carell.
He is a church-going teetotaller who has neither been to jail nor served in the military, according to a new survey of more than 7000 people. He also represents an estimated 1.1 million American men and 800,000 women aged 25 to 45 who have never had sex.
The study, led by urologist Michael Eisenberg of the University of California, San Francisco, will appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine. His team's survey found that 13.9 per cent of men and 8.9 per cent of women said they have never had sex.
Men and women who attended church at least once a week were respectively 5 and 3.9 times more likely to be virgins than those who attended church less often. Virgins of both sexes were slightly less likely to have swigged a beer in the last year, compared to non-virgins. And women with college degrees were 5.4 times more likely to be virgins than women who never got their Bachelor's.
Men who attended the military or spent time behind bars were slightly less likely to be 40-year-old virgins than those not exposed to such discipline. "We used incarceration or military service as surrogate markers for exposure to violence or aggressive behaviour," Eisenberg's team writes.
This may be true for prison, but people join the military for reason other than aggressive tendencies. "The entire reason for the low rate of virgins with military experience is likely less clear than simply those with violent or risk taking tendencies," they add.

I must admit that there have been times when I’ve considered the possibility that life without “the General” would be a bit easier.
Napoleon?
You mean She Who Must Be Obeyed?
Depends what the meaning of ‘never’ is. /WJC
It’s kind of unnatural. I remember when I met my wife she had a friend, a pretty gal who was in her late 20’s and was a virgin. She had dated one particular guy for several weeks when one night he was kissing her and tried to slip her a tongue. She thought the concept revolting and ended the relationship. I just can’t imagine getting to the age of 40 as a virgin.
Methinks CC means the lil helmeted COMMANDER below.
300,000 more women are NOT virgins compared to men? Interesting.
His team’s survey found that 13.9 percent of men and 8.9 per cent of women said they have never had sex.
That being said, I think a fair number of people are just asexual—very low sex drives.
When my middle-aged divorced women friends ask me about middle-aged guys they are dating that have never been married, I tell them that there is a reason they have never been married and to stop wasting their time with those guys.
None of those women ever married to one of those kind of guys.
We've got to get these two groups together!
A tongue vs. his tongue? Maybe that's the problem. Maybe it was some kind of crazy engorged Gene Simmons tongue purchased at a joke shop. :O)
A growing number of people are virgins because they just do not have the energy to bring about a sexual relationship. For them, it is utterly exhausting to even try.
In most of the modern nations, the continual pressure and stress put on children to achieve, instead pushes many to exhaustion. Then, confronted with the near impossibility of having a successful career path like their parents, instead they face being burdened by deep academic debt for decades, when they should be raising a family.
Many of them are trying to be responsible, not marrying or having children because they know they cannot support them.
Others find sex to just be rote and dreary. Even their fantasies are drab.
We've got to get these two groups together!
Yeah, and the reason is because the guys are not going to marry a woman just for the sake of marrying a woman and settling.
IMHO, it's better to date longer and get to know the person first.
For example, I would never ever propose to a woman unless and until we had a really, really bad fight.
That way I can see how long it takes to reconcile and how WE reconcile.
And that gives an idea as to how good the communication is in the relationship.
Getting married to someone before you have a big argument with them could result in a grave mistake.
In the event my to-be spouse holds a wicked grudge, I want to find that out BEFORE marriage.
Sounds like if someone doesn’t find Happily Ever After by 30, they should give up trying, because something is “wrong with them.
“When I have male friends who date or consider dating divorced women, I tell them not to waste their time on these women (except perhaps for a fling) because these women are divorced for a reason.”
What if these women are divorced because their ex-husbands cheated on them or abused them?
