California ranks 2nd in combined sales tax

California has the nation’s highest statewide sales tax and second highest when combined with local levies, in the United States, according to a new report from the Tax Foundation.

(California is one of three states (Utah and Virginia aren’t in the top 10) that levy a statewide, mandatory local sales tax, which the Tax Foundation combines in the state sales tax. Some other sources list California’s statewide rate as 7.25%.)

Californians currently are paying an extra 1%, which is due to expire July 1, which would drop California to 8th on the Tax Foundation list. Gov. Jerry Brown wants the legislature to put a 5-year extension of the extra sales tax, as well as the income tax and vehicle license tax, before the voters in a special election.

Isn't it better to have the local government levy the sales tax? It's closer to the voters/taxpayers who can throw the politicians out if they don't like it.

Yes, but Tennessee has no income tax, very low property taxes and the sales tax can be deducted on fed returns.

This is actually good for savers...............AND it’s good because illegal immigrants actually pay taxes here because they have to purchase some things even when they are paid in cash. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

California ranks #1 in voter stupidity...continue to vote for politicians that allow for the importation of poverty, support these people with generous welfare payments, overregulate businesses and enact strict environmental laws that have diminishing results on the climate, and overtax succsessful enterprise. Kind of like Michigan going back decades...
