“...it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and institute new government....” (notice it does not limit what form of new government may be chosen)

We’ve LOST.

I wonder how different things may have turned out if CSA would have defeated the yanks.

Look at the federal government now! Are you proud of what we have up in Washington D.C.?

Corrupt, self serving, power hungry, greedy bunch of crooks the world has ever witnessed.

God bless the sons and daughters of Confederate Veterans.

Keep up the good work in preserving our southern heritage.

Individuals cannot secede.

And states cannot secede unilaterally.

Lol. Not everyone. I think you're wrongly painting the majority of FReepers in a bad light, pal.

even you

Likely the only people who would consider me a troll are blogpimps and yankees.

Many saw N-S as a troll on issues outside of just the CW. And Jim Robinson obviously agreed.

Even Lincoln agreed with him...until his railroad buddies told him they needed the North and South to stay together.

Taxes were an issue too. Can't just let all that tariff revenue and etc. go...

oh, and the economy as well. Northern mills and shipping wouldn't do so well without Southern cotton and crops.

” When they ratified the Constitution, they gave up any “right” to leave”

Really? Lincoln agreed that a State had the right to leave. He even wrote as much. In many instances several other States, including northern States, had threatened to leave the union and no one said they couldn’t. It was a common tactic to use for a State to get their way when they thought the union was headed on the wrong course.

You seriously don’t know much about history, so you should read about it before coming to public school conclusions.

Throughout that period the South had taken a beating by the North, especially in trade laws. The North made all kinds of laws and regulations that hurt the South. The South had enough and left. Simple as that.

Some friends and I are planning a trip to DC in April. On the way, we are going to visit Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, Gettysburg, Monocacy, and Gathland (site of the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, where my great-great-great-uncle, Private Stephen Treadwell of Co. F, 16th Georgia Infantry, ANV was mortally wounded). Then we are going to go down and visit Mount Vernon, the home of one of the original rebels, George Washington.

Do you know to which I refer? We WERE talking about Brits and colonial rebels. Not CSA. Yes, BTW, the great “revolution” to create this very country was fought by REBELS.

Four of us are going, so we will split the cost of gas and the hotel. Otherwise it would be too expensive to be able to spend more than a day or two. This way, we are going to spend six days and five nights, including four full days in DC.

Oh, I see.

So in some twisted way, it’s OK to actually “revolt” (which means attempt to overthrow the government, in truth, not merely fight against it), but NOT OK to just walk away peacably.

Both the so-called AmRev and the ACW were essentially the same thing - walk-aways. Neither involved toppling the old government, just getting away from it.

Peaceful revolution is fine if you can pull it off. But revolution, when justified, may include blood.
