Well it has been a long road for us Viking fans and ever since I watched them lose Super Bowl XII to the Oakland Raiders on Jan 9, 1977, I and many Viking fans have been waiting for them to return to the big game. In the mean time we have had to suffer through numerous close calls that has had them at the very brink of returning, just to fall short. Then came the Favre situation where we were forced to endure watching the man we grew to hate, take our team to the brink of the Super Bowl again, just to choke in the NFC championship. Again us Viking had to endure watching another team we should have beat take home our trophy.
Well, here we are, the day before the Super Bowl and us Viking fans are destined to watch two teams we have good reason to dislike, some if us just hate them both. Well, growing up Duluth Minnesota in the 60's meant that the Packers ruled the roost for most of my childhood. Then a new team came along and gave me a reason to hold my head up in pride. The Norseman we call the Vikings, would become the dominant team of the black and blue division of the NFC.
Much of what I am sharing with you will be posted in an article I am writing for my site with the ER, but this one is targeted especially for my Freeper friends. As many of you know, I write a blog for the ER, and it is currently the number one blog in Chico and Oroville California.
As for the reason I am posting a link to a poll from a newspaper that most around the country could care less about, well it's because Aaron Rodgers is a homeboy from Chico. He went to Pleasant valley High School, plus Butte College which is but 20 miles from Chico. Aaron Rodgers, the local boy who could not even get a look by any big colleges for a scholarship. He persevered though by going to Butte a local community college and becoming a standout who was eventually noticed by the Cal bears of Berkley. Berkley is the town Chico is often times compared to.
Interestingly his High School sport teams mascot is a Viking. You would think I would fit right in and join the rooting of their sports team, and for many years after i moved here in 1988 I have. Then Aaron was drafted by the Green Bay Packers. I knew he was good, and I was angry at the 49ers for not drafting him. Reality is it was the best thing that happened for him, because the 49ers had a lot of problems, and Aaron was able to study behind Favre.
So here I am living in Chico California, a die hard Minnesota Viking fan who despises the Green Bay Packers. Oh I have tried to step away from football a few times, but trying to quit the NFL is more difficult than quitting heroin. So I still watch football, but now I watch it in Green Bay California. No getting away from the team that half my friends rooted for when I was a child. A team whom I am constantly reminded has won 3 Superbowls, while the Viking have none.
Everywhere I go I see Packer fans wearing those god awful green jersey with that lame logo, a "G". Ask them and they don't even know what the G stands for, but it matters not because Rodgers is the new Bart Star who is going to put a steak in the hated legend that was Bret Favre. Even at church I cannot get away from it, because Aaron Rogers will be mentioned in a sermon as he was last week when the senior Pastor mentioned it in a message about perseverance and keeping the faith. Well, I am asking my fellow Freepers a favor today. Please go to the poll which is on the front page of my hometown newspaper that I have linked to and vote that the Steelers will win. It matters not that you may want Green Bay to win. I just want someway to show my displeasure with all the Green Bay talk I am being forced to endure. Two years of Favre at the helm of the Vikings, and now this. There is just so much a man can stand, and I am drawing the line today. Imagine if thousands of voters chose Steelers over the home boys team the packers in his home town? You will make this old man smile as they wonder why no one wants Green bay to win.
Then if you want, stop by my blog, GATE,and give me a hit. I know, I am shamelessly pimping my blog but considering the humiliation I must endure in Green Bay California, it's the least you could do for a fellow Freeper from Duluth who finds himself living amongst the enemy.
He’s 34, but he’s one of the hardest working players on the team and a torn ACL isn’t what it was in the past. I’d like to see him back because not only is he tough, reliable, and relentless, he’s Patriot’s “family”. There are some players that become such a part of the team that it’s difficult to imagine watching a game and not seeing them. He’s one of those players.
Oh!
I meant Marshall Faulk! Not Kevin Faulk. Sorry. I meant that LT will probably be back next year, the only team he hasn’t gotten revenge is from the Steelers.
Glad you’re leaving.
14 - 0 , Packers
Ready to flip sides yet?
21 - 3 , Packers
Ready to flip sides yet?
There’s still time...
Getting close.....lol. However, I have to hope that the Steelers will pull through. I hope you have a great night no matter the outcome.
Too late to change sides now,
You’re a loser!
It was a truly hard fought game!
I just woke up and found out the score.....the game started at midnight on base so sometime during the second half I fell asleep. It was over at 0400 so probably around 0300 I was sleeping on the couch. 31-25 is much better than I figured. Congrats on your win. Have a great week.
Well, it's over. How's that gnashing thing going? :)
I’m not a fan of LT.
Only your dentist would know for sure. ;)
I'm disappointed, no doubt. There wasn't a time in the game that I thought we'd lose, even at 21-3, because I've become accustomed to them pulling it out in the 2nd half. I though the last drive was easy pickings. One drive for the win. They do it all the time. Oh well... good game Packers! Congratulations to the better team on this day.
I do have two complaints though. First... that was the worst National Anthem I've ever heard before a Superbowl. Musically it was just plain bad. She was off key, she inserted lots of notes that didn't belong, and SHE GOT THE WORDS WRONG!!! I give that a flat F.
Second is that the half time show would have sounded better with trained musical monkeys playing feral cats with electric razors. There are scant few musicians left in pop music. They're all "performers"... not musicians. They'd fit better into a carnival side-show than on TV pretending to be musically significant. I give them an F flat. I'm ashamed for our country when we spread that embarrassing sonic and visual garbage to the world.
Best part of the show was the sweet kid who won the Play-60 essay contest. I hope she reaches her goal... the Stillers could use a kicker.
Your loss. He’s a good man.
Any reasonable person would conclude the Steelers are the NFL team most identified with the Baraqqi regime.
So it was inevitable that the curse of Obama would come into play, LOL.
or at least one that opposes the team headed by a Baraqqi ambassadorial appointee.
>> “so probably around 0300 I was sleeping on the couch” <<
.
OOPS!
I wasn’t thinking about how far east you are; you’re forgiven for snoozing.
I’m done gloating, GB is my wife’s team, not mine anyway :o)
I guess we’ll have to disagree on that.
You’re a Cheatroits fan, so.
I personally don’t see how anyone can cheer for them.
But Tomlinson is a good man.
? It was nice speaking with you. Good day.
