If you could move to one state, which would you chose?

Ok, I am from NJ. Between the high taxes, strict gun laws and crazy liberals I am seriously thinking about moving... have been thinking this for quite some time. Right now I have three children and have to pay for private schooling for all three because the public school's agenda's here are disingenuous and horrible. I want to make sure I do not go from the frying pan into the fire. I have a few choices for job transfers to NC, TX and OH. I need to be in a good area as I have a Neurological disorder and need an area with good doctors. However, I want to look at a state that will not give into any FEDERAL PRESSURE regardless (Are there any states left?). Looking for good infrastructure, few unions, decent schools (or good private schools), friendly gun laws and good hospitals. I guess what I am looking for is a a state that will stick to Constitutional principals regardless of what happens.

I lived in Columbia for 7 1/2 years and liked it quite a bit...eight months out of the year. Then there’s summer.

SC’s not a bad state. I really liked it, it sort of rivals Texas in the sheer ornery attitude of the citizens toward the Feds. And it’s got Jim Demint and Joe Wilson...of course, it’s also got Jim Clyburn, but noplace is perfect.

I’m a proud native of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and I do have to say, if you get outside the DC suburbs, Virginia is a fantastic state to live in. Taxes aren’t (or weren’t) bad, there’s history all around, the people are friendly, it’s beautiful in many areas.

My only real experience was a few weeks at Norfolk Naval Base with a can stuck in drydock while Gulf War I came and went. I didn’t have a vehicle with me (long story) but I heard tales of the nicer parts of VA outside of Norfolk.

Greenville, SC area! It’s growing, it’s beautiful, it has a great ambiance about it. International population, near the mountains and the beaches. Great town.

And high summer temps with outrageously high humidity and the biggest dang bugs I ever saw. I don’t want to live there, visits to the in-laws have shown me enough.

Maryland sucks! If I had my druthers, would move back to Pennsylvania, but the wife doesn’t want to.

Most likely, we will end up in VA (Shennedoah valley) or NC,

also looking at MT and ME. Politics of ME are iffy and NC has wierd gun laws (no RTC).

I used to live in the DFW area. Like any other urban area, you’re going to have the good with the bad. If I were to go back, I’d likely prefer the central areas between Waco, Austin, and San Antonio.

My recommendation to you, would be NC. I've been in TX for 36 years this month. The reasons for my suggestion, is that you can get back east and visit easier from NC than TX. And TEXAS SUMMERS SUCK!!

My family moved from Pennsylvania to Washington (state) two years ago, due to my hubby's employment. His salary was exactly the same, and we sold our home for the exact same price that we paid for a home here, so we are a perfect test case.

1. No state, or township income tax. We paid income taxes on our gross income to the state, the township we lived in and the township hubby worked. Savings: 4,500.

2. For homes with the exact same dollar value, we paid 6500 in PA, and are now paying 3000. Savings: 3500.

3. Our homeowners insurance was over 1000, now it is less than 500/year. We are also paying about 1000 less per year for car insurance. Total savings: 1500

Total savings: 10,000. We can take vacations, now. And I didn't even mention toll roads. There is no traffic congestion in Eastern WA, the roads are pristine, the food prices are lower. (No more minimum milk price of $4/gallon)

I should add that sales taxes are higher, but you can always skip over to Tax Free Oregon for the big ticket items.

Nebraska’s gun laws still have a lot of tweaking necessary, plus the Omaha police like to interpret the laws differently than the State AG. Taxes in Nebraska are terribly cost prohibitive. All this state wants is your money. They will attempt to tax every last cent out of you.

Just moved to Texas from Wisconsin in May. Best thing I ever did.

Scott Walker might turn it around, but we couldn’t afford to wait.

The weather alone was worth the change. It’s hard to quantify how much of my life was spent preparing for snow, clearing the snow, driving in the snow, repairing damage from snow, etc.

You exchange the snow for some pretty oppressive heat in the summer - but you don’t have to shovel “heat”. And the true value of a pool is shown when it’s 95 degrees or hotter. It’s hard to believe how we tricked ourselves into thinking swimming in Lake Michigan or some northern lake “was refreshing”.

The economy (while far from perfect - plenty of overbuilt retail) is booming by comparison to Wisconsin/Illinois. And I’m absolutely giddy to never have to file another state income tax!

I could go on and on.

southest Utah. isn’t that Moab. very rocky country. some years ago I took a trip from the grand canyon up through zion and bryce and then traveled around in southern utah on the east and west side. There were some towns in southwestern utah that reminded me of california back in the 60’s. moab was ok if you liked dirt bike riding, climbing around on rocks and rafting. and once you got away from the tourist areas there was an air of the old west in the southeast corner of the utah—as in long ago and far away.

But these are only passing impressions.

What is it about southeast utah that impresses you?

We lived in New Mexico for four years, then when Gary Johnson couldn’t run for another term we scooted.

Our new Republican Governor Martinez seems to be doing a good job of cleaning house so far. I moved from Florida (way expensive) to New Mexico (much cheaper) five years ago and have been happy with the decision. No hurricanes, no $6000 of property tax on a 1200 square foot home, no $5000 a year for homeowners insurance, no palmetto bugs...

If I could somehow just move NH to the Sunbelt, I’d be all set.
