I recall in the 80's there being alot of hub-bub about DMSO (Dimethylsulfoxide) being used as a pain reliever for arthritis and general snake-oil for what ails ya.
Well, in the 80's I was in my 20's and early 30's, so I never paid much attention. Plus, these were the very early days of the internet so info was basically what you saw on the local news, and not much else.
Now, however, being in my 40's (just kidding... do the math!!) I have some minor aches and pains and perhaps early arthritis. Not much, but enuff to make me say Damn! I don't like that at all!
So at the gun show last week, I bought a bottle of 99.99 DMSO. My symptoms flaring up a bit, I decided to try it.
It seems to work. Relief was pretty much immediate. The only thing I noticed that seems to be bad (more annoying than bad) is it does make me itch a bit!
Any other FReepers ever use it? Any experiences or recommendations you might want to relate?

You may be suffering from Plantar facitis. The recommended stretching exercises are very effective.
LOL but you could develop a really bad limp if that leg fell off..
Dilute it in water. The 99.9% DMSO solution also irritates my skin - but its fine when slightly diluted.
Its kind of unsettling in that I can taste it instantly in my mouth - even though I just dap a little bit on my leg or back. That's some pretty quick transfer to the skin into the blood system.
I didn't really find a great amount of pain relief - but to be honest I didn't use it too regularly (like I said, I found it unsettling that I could taste it in my mouth immediately after dapping on a drop on my knee).
Dogs, like most other animals, make their own Vitamin C.
But just as hormone levels in most animals (including humans) drop as we age, dogs production of vitamin C drops off as they age.
When my dog started to have problems at about 14 I started giving him a little extra Vit C and zinc. and it helped quite a bit.
He made it till he was 17. By then, there was nothing more I could do.
You might want to use it sparingly. It might have caused my hubby’s brother’s kidney failure = kidney transplant. He used it a lot.
Something you might want to try that can’t hurt you is eliminate all nightshades from your diet—tomatoes, potatoes, peppers (black table pepper is fine), eggplant and paprika. Try this for a month and if it helps, keep it up, if it doesn’t go have some french fries and pizza. This seems to be quite helpful for lots of folks.
And then, of course, you have the raisins in gin route. I have heard people swear by it. Soak a bunch of golden raisins in cheap gin for a couple days. Then take three every morning. At least it’s another experiment that can’t hurt you, unless you’re an alcoholic.
We’ve used it on our rescued TB & it worked. It does smell too. It didn’t work for joint pain on anyone I know that has tried it. Sometimes I think if you believe something will work...it does. Mind over matter thing.
I know about the nightshade family thing - and I’m probably guilty as sin.
Someone mentioned diet early in the thread. Well, my diet is pretty darn good! Eat lots of salads - fruits - fish - beans...
And any salad I ever eat is loaded with tomatoes, green and red peppers, you know what I mean.

Did you give your dog the same vit. C people take? I will take mega doses of Vit C at the first sign of a cold or flu and it short circuits it and usually within a day the signs of a cold or flu are gone...Vit C is not fat soluable so you cannot OD of it like Vit A D E K. The body takes what it needs and excretes the rest in bring yellow urine. If its OK to give the dog the same as I take, I’ll also give it to her..
Well it could be the placebo effect on humans.
But animals don’t know if you are rubbing DMSO on them or slug slime or Dom Perignon!
And there are tons of documented cases of it having positive effects in veterinary use.

One 500 mg vitamin C tab (crushed up) mixed with his food daily.
After he died, I told his vet, who had been his vet since birth. She was kind enough to send me a postcard with a note and said he was one of the very best cared for dogs she had had the privilege of treating in her career.
I was still broken hearted about it, but lifes a beach...
One caveat: your dog might initially react to it with some mild diarrhea.... which is not a problem for outside dogs, which mine was. So depending on circumstances, you might want to start with a lower dose.
My Dad came home from the Vet one day with DMSO. IIRC (and this was back in the 80’s...I was 16 or 17), it did help. I still recall the very odd feeling of putting something on my skin and actually feeling it completely penetrate the joint within minutes. Odd, odd, sensation.
Whether it was advisable to use this drug on a 16 year old girl remains in question...LOL! I also ended up having several cortisone shots over the course of my last season; but my arm has not (yet) fallen off.

Thanks for the info and warning. I know some meds people use are not to be used on dogs...I made the mistake one time of giving a dog an aspirin for pain...she ended up with bloody diarrhea, forcefully expelled all over a wall. Had to get the right stuff from the vet. yukky to clean up.
those things are awesome- I have problems with my muscles- I get kinks alot where I can’t turn my head without pain, that would take weeks to heal without constant heat- I put a thermacare pad on and it usually takes about 2 days and the pain is totally gone- they really are a Godsend- a little expensive, but with my muscle condition, I’ve found it’s always best to have a couple onhand- one of the best inventions ever dreamed up in my opinion

My FIL uses WD40 on his achy joints.
