I recall in the 80's there being alot of hub-bub about DMSO (Dimethylsulfoxide) being used as a pain reliever for arthritis and general snake-oil for what ails ya.
Well, in the 80's I was in my 20's and early 30's, so I never paid much attention. Plus, these were the very early days of the internet so info was basically what you saw on the local news, and not much else.
Now, however, being in my 40's (just kidding... do the math!!) I have some minor aches and pains and perhaps early arthritis. Not much, but enuff to make me say Damn! I don't like that at all!
So at the gun show last week, I bought a bottle of 99.99 DMSO. My symptoms flaring up a bit, I decided to try it.
It seems to work. Relief was pretty much immediate. The only thing I noticed that seems to be bad (more annoying than bad) is it does make me itch a bit!
Any other FReepers ever use it? Any experiences or recommendations you might want to relate?
I'm all ears!
Not Dihydrogen Monoxide! That stuff has recently been watered down!
The oldest line in the book. Keep saving yourself for after the marriage. We are proud of you.
When my joint pain kicked in full force the VA gave me 80mgs of hydrocodone everyday. I seldom care if my leg falls off.
I’m with you on the Glucosamine - seems to work for me too. I noticed that the cheapo store-brand/generic seems to work better than the bottle of name brand pills I tried once.
djf, I bin mixn b0ut equal parts (jigger) JB & DMSO befor breakfast and as needed there after.
No pain Maite.
R?
You can buy the dehydrated version...just add water as per the directions.
I use it for veterinary applications—getting medications into horses. It is a solvent that will carry chemicals across the barrier of the skin. And it causes liver damage, so I would not use it on myself. Speaking as someone who has arthritis, that’s better than liver damage.
You'll think I'm nuts, but have your doctor check your thyroid. Mine was REALLY bad and every morning my feet felt like they were full of ground glass. That was one of the multitude of symptoms.
She warned me to be extremely careful, though, as DMSO enables delivery to the blood brain barrier, or something like that. She stressed to not touch anything where the DMSO had been applied because varnish off furniture or other toxins could ride on the DMSO to poison me.
She said that it's a by-product of the wood industry and I think the only place you can get it is at hobby shops.
I tried several of the brand names also when I first started taking it. Nothing seem to work. So I bought Schiff brand and without the condritin. 150 tablets usually cost 12.98 at Wal Mart. I use to wake up in the morning and my right hand would be numb and the fingers wouldn’t work until I moved them back and forth with my L. hand..Haven’t had the problem in years and the old knee joints don’t hurt any more..sometimes cheaper is better..:O) GG
When my lower back starts bothering me, I put one of their wraps on and it always does the trick. They are the best thing I have found to provide relief when my back acts up.
Funny you should mention that. Was reading up on SSKI this AM and ran across DMSO. Had never heard of either, but both are mentioned in this article.

You have to be careful with the amount of water you use for your Dihydrogen Monoxide...
Last year I asked my current vet about using it on my boxer who has arthritis. He didn't seem to think it would help. Of course, the fact I was paying him almost $100.00 every sixty days for arthritis medicine, along with a liver function test once a year, may have had something to do with that.
Well, I would definitely not consider myself a hypochondriac type. I take an aspirin a day, but not for pain, for the heart benefits and other stuff.
So I wouldn’t like pour it in my bathtub and jump in - I used it very sparingly, more as a see-if-it-works kind of thing than as an actual relief I would depend on.
I cannot help but be VERY suspicious anytime you hear how bad and horrible something is from the medical powers that be. They are in it for the moolah. Plain and simple.
And when you hear conflicting stories from people who say the stuff worked wonders for them, you end up not knowing who to believe.
Look at silver. FDA has for years condemned colloidal silver. And I know now that it will be like five minutes before somebody posts a pic of a blue guy!
But blue is better than dead.
Silver sulfadiazene has been THE TREATMENT OF CHOICE for burn victims for many years. And my personal long form BC shows that they put silver nitrate in my eyes after I was born. Now, as time goes on, they are putting nano=silver in socks to keeo them from stinking! They are making swimming pool filters out of silver! I have Curad bandaids that have silver in them. Yet the FDA continues to carry on with their colloidal-silver-is-snake-oil campaign.
Which is it? Who do you believe?
Anyways, my basic report would be that I tried a quite small amount, rubbed it into my elbows, and it has relieved them. How long it lasts - that’s another question. Another question even beyond that would be “If it helps as an anti-inflammatory, can that by itself cause my symptoms (,ild pain and stiffness) to go away for good?”
It might. Can’t say yet.
Thanks to all FReepers for their answers and ideas!
DMSO is an industrial solvent.
It does relieve authritis symptoms. I have known several people who used it. I can smell it on them instantly.
The major danger from DMSO is what it can force into your blood stream. If you for instance have contact with insecticides or pesticides the solvent can force them at much higher rate than normal into the blood stream.
Caution is in order with the use.
Try the DMSO, but make damn sure it is pharmaceutical grade. Buy it from a vet, or a horse place. Make sure you are absolutely clean when you apply it with a one-time only sterile swab. You will taste it in the back of your throat in about 2 minutes. It is instantaneously absorbed through the skin, has medical uses both on its own and as a carrier for other medications. Fabulous arthritis liniment.
Cap tightly between uses. It will absolutely reduce inflammation and is actually chemically related to Glucosamine.
Before you become a disciple, Read up on it on the web. Do not tell your Doctor, as it will not hit people medicine, except as a treatment for interstitial cystitis, for another 50 years. Remember, it tooks the AMA gang 100 years to accept the germ "theory."
Go for it. It's a frickin' miracle drug.
After your first treatment, line your stall with fresh straw, and no galloping for 24 hours.
Good idea. Your thyroid can be the cause of several problems.
