Faced with a diminished drug-development pipeline in the private sector, the Obama administration is starting a federal drug development center, aiming to spur the creation of new medicines.
The new National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences will get $1 billion in funding to conduct drug research with the goal of attracting private investors. Federal scientists may go so far as to start human trials if necessary, the New York Times reports. Federal officials want the center to open as soon as October.

Tax their profits, use the tax to go into completion with them. This will stimulate them to, what? Go out of business?
Let’s see how far they get when they have to go up against that other model of government efficiency - the FDA. They want to know why new drugs aren’t developed fast enough? Look no further than the FDA. Especially Dendreon’s prostate cancer immunotherapy, Provenge.
Anyone wondering why the pharma companies aren't howling about it?
It reminds me of actually an old trick in Canadian politics. Get rhe government on board, announce a private-public partnership, and tell the carpers that thay now have a problem with the Government of Canada. This trick's so old, it was co-opted by the multiculturalist crew.
In today's regulatory environment, aspirin would not even make it to Phase 3 trials (too many side effects).
