The re-inveisioned iPad for every Geek...
My fertile imagination - a Vanity heavily inspired by a fellow freeper | January 24, 2011 | Swordmaker

Posted on 01/24/2011 9:13:59 PM PST by Swordmaker

There have been in-numerable threads on Geek sites and Computer websites about the Geeks complaining about the failings of the Apple iPad... and how the various Android tablets are going to kick iPad butt in the near to distant future because THEY will have what the iPad doesn't have. The Geeks have had a litany of items that the iPad is missing... it doesn't have this, and it doesn't have that... It fails to meet a list of specs this, and list of specs that... and when the Android or Windows7 tablets finally hit the market, everyone will throw their iPads in the trash and Nirvana will wax joyful in Tablet heaven as all users will finally see the light about what they have been missing in their crippled Apple iPads.

So, inspired by the input offered by fellow Freeper on this thread:

Which is better, iPhone or Android?

who said that users of tablet computers REALLY weren't interested in "thinness or lightness" or even long life in the batteries... or even how good the screen is... what they really want is a complete desk top computer experience in a touch screen computer with Flash capabilities! Oh, and they want the ability to hook up any thing to anything no matter how antiquated or obsolete it might be (at least that seemed to be the concept...)! He stated it could be as thick and as heavy as it needed to be to attain that complete experience... along with spinning hard drives, and heavy batteries. He'd accept 1" thick... and heavy. Just so long as it had a touch screen... no matter what size.

So... I decided to RE-INVISION the Apple iPad from that viewpoint... giving he Geeks what they seemed to want... connectivity... retroactive connectivity...

My thanks to the head start given to the guys who created the MacBook Air Craft carrier two years ago... I just took their ideas to their logical and ridiculous conclusion.

Without further ado... I present the Not-Apple OhMyGoshPad Tablet computer:

Connectivity is the name of the game on the OhMyGoshPad TS-1

Of course, all of this power and connectivity comes at a price... the cooling of this baby requires four fans, two on the end and two on the bottom... with plenty of venting.

The OhMyGoshPad comes with THREE SLIDE out keyboards... as well as the touchscreen's virtual keyboard. On one side are two slide outs, one in standard QWERTY layout and the other for those who prefer Dvorak layout. On the back side is another slide out keyboard that is customizable in any language the user choses, including Klingon and L33t sp3ak. The OhMyGoshPad comes with keycaps for all known languages at no extra charge as Geeks seem to think that such things should be free. . . so these extra key caps are included in the basic unit's base price.

The BLuRay/DVD tray has a built in ten-key pad so that when not being used to burn movies or watch them, you can use your OhMyGoshPad to crunch those spreadsheets that everyone wants to use your tablets for.

In addition, although you can't see it in these views, not only does the OhMyGoshPad have both forward facing 24 Megapixel IMAX video format video cameras, it has both forward and rearward facing IMAX video PROJECTORS * in 3D with the ability to simultaneously project two different 3D movies at up to 60 frames per second in full Dolby digital sound and at 3200 lumens of brightness... in broad daylight!

All of this comes with batteries that, although very heavy (we aren't going to advertise exactly HOW heavy they are, we are keeping that as a surprise for when you open your crate with the TF-2), will last a full month between recharges... if you are very careful not to use your OhMyGoshPad at all.

Of course, we've saved the very best news for last. The OhMyGoshPad not only does all of this, running the latest version of the Android cell Phone OS... and we PROMISE it will run the Tablet version if and when they finally get it out... someday... but, HERE is the really great news for all you Geeks out there, It also runs FLASH! ** Well, sort of ... It only crashes occasionally.

The Price? Well... it's only a little more expensive than the Apple iPad—those free keycaps cost money, you know! And so do all those connector thingies!— but you can get it subsidized from a carrier for less!

(* Warning!!! using your OhMyGoshPad will deplete your batteries in less than two hours, less if you use the projectors for their intended purposes. Projector system should only be used when the OhMyGoshPad is connected to a 220 volt power supply. Adequate ventilation must be provided. Please see OMGP.com for more information on specs of what constitutes adequate ventilation and size of ventilation fans required. Fire prevention equipment is responsibility of the user. Local fire permits and licensing to use projectors may be required. Lamps are rated at 22 minutes lifetime usage. Contact OhMyGoshPad store for replacement Lamps. Lamps sold separately. Lamps are not a user installable or replaceable item.)

** Note, use of FLASH will also deplete your OhMyGoshPad batteries at a faster rate than using other applications and you should turn off the FLASH applications when through using it...

He’s just getting visitor logs from his website. It’s not obvious from how it’s posted, but that’s all it is.

Have I forgotten anything?

5-1/4 and 8" floppies.

Digital cassette and microcassette players would be nice too.

Well, my son is an Iphone/Ipad developer. (he get’s paid a lot for his talent) He’d like to be able to stream real-time video to it to control a remote control model. The 5+ second delay is not acceptable. He may have to write it for an Android...

Actually, you made one very serious mistake.

no serious geek cares a whit about floppy drives any more. It;s all DVD-RW!

LOL

Stylus? Should have detachable rubber "finger tip" end.

One of the Firewire ports should be FW800.

One of the USB ports should be USB 3.0.

The Audio Out should be 5.1. Stereo is totally, like, passe.

And don't forget the packaging.

Have I forgotten anything?

You're going to need a briefcase handle on one end to lift that sucker. Need ports for the FM antenna and TV coax input.

What? No pullout keyboard?

And I hope you can open it up and change the processor and the memory and the graphics card.

There are already apps doing that, and there’s less than a 5 second delay. See: http://www.forevergeek.com/2010/01/parrot_intros_ardrone_remote_control_plane_for_iphone/

If he has a 5 second delay, he’s doing it wrong.

> One of the Firewire ports should be FW800.

Should have been "one more" so that you have two FW800 and two FW400.

Serial ports?????? How can you configure your serial ports, if you don't have any serial ports.

In both 9-pin and 25-pin versions, of course. And maybe one in RJ-45 "Cisco Console" configuration.

Yep, what I meant was to have two, trade one of the FW400's for another FW800.
