Man Arrested for Having Bloody Cooler Full of Horse Meat

Hialeah man connected to several horse killings thanks to his fingerprints

Another man has been arrested in connection with a brutal horse slaughtering in Miami-Dade.

Juan Martinez-Gonzalez, 44, has been charged with improper disposal of a dead animal after he and two other men were caught with coolers filled with freshly severed horse legs.

It's the fifth arrest in the crackdown against horse slaughters, which first reared its ugly head in 2009. Since then at least 24 horses have been butchered for their meat, which usually ends up on the black market. Martinez-Gonzalez allegedly took part in several killings in May.

On May 26, Police received an anonymous tip which led them to a white van with blood smeared on the door and filled with bloody coolers just outside a ranch located at near NW 131st Ave and NW 182nd Street. Two other men were arrested and charged with loitering and prowling that day, but it was a gruesome discovery in a dumpster the next day that led police to Martinez-Gonzalez.

Another tip told police a man was dumping horse parts in a dumpster. Investigators sent the bloody pieces to a forensics lab and fingerprints on both the bloody coolers and the dumpster carcass matched Martinez-Gonzalez. It's unclear if prosecutors will push for the stiffer charges and penalties created by the Florida Legislature after the rash of brutal butchering.

Last month, Santiago Cabrera was sentenced to five years in prison for killing two horses.

Slaughtering horses in the US was legal up until a few years ago.

Plenty of people around the world eat the stuff and I don’t see where in the Constitution is says the government can ban people from doing it.

"improper disposal of a dead animal" "sentenced... for killing 2 horses"

So what exactly is the law? Given that the indians ate horse meat, I'm surprised you can't kill and eat your own horse. Not that I would want to.

Is it a state law or a federal law?

It is obvious that the writer has never been to a slaughter house. He sounds like he thinks killing a horse is the same as killing a human. Slaughter of animals (I like meat) is hard, messy work and not for the squimish. The problem here is the state feels obligated to protect us from real &/or imagined food safety issues. We are going to see more of this as the FDA horror Bill (HR2751) just passed in the Lame Duck Session is implemented. Passed by stealth, votes hidden, bills renamed as a vehicle in the last minutes of the Session. No new coverage despite 74 house members "Not Voting". In my opinion this could increase food cost in the U.S. by 50% (or more). Regulation paid for by the producers are always passed to the consumer. If you are hungy in 2011 don't blame a farmer, blame the lying POLs who passed this.

These have been stolen horses. It is not illegal in most places to slaughter your own horse for personal consumption.
If they want horse meat, they should just go to an auction and buy one. Horses are dirt cheap now. Stealing someones horse to slaughter it is stupid.

It sounds like they made eating beef illegal.

Given that the indians ate horse meat

On the French Grande Armees return from Moscow they learned that horse meat was good. My french father in law was happy during the mad cow scare a few years ago that horse meat was available, he says it is very good.

Both.

A good example is the USDA shut down one plant by making it a rule that they can’t pay the USDA for their own inspections and the USDA isn’t required to inspect the plant so the inspectors were pulled and the plant was shut down for lack of government inspection.

There haven’t been too many outright bans recently, they’re just regulated to death.

Many years ago when we lived in Minneapolis, we found a butcher shop that had really good meat and reasonable prices. We bought all of our beef there.
One day we read in the paper that the butcher shop had been closed because it was selling horse meat.

I believe the Europeans call it “red deer” but I could be wrong.

My understanding of this law is that without the inspection the plants couldn't export the meat.

There are a wide variety of things eaten around the world that I don’t care to utilize as food. I spent time doing research in southern Africa, and despite the abundance of tasty game, on one occasion all we had to eat was zebra. Thick, extremely rare steaks. Ugh - you can have mine.
