What Are You Reading Now? - My Quarterly Survey
12/31/10 | MplsSteve

Posted on 12/31/2010 7:25:35 AM PST by MplsSteve

Hello everyone!

it's time for my quarterly "What Are You reading Now?" survey. As you know, I consider Freepers to be among the more well-read of those of us out in cyberspace. As a result, I like to find out what you're reading.

It can be anything...a technical journal, a NY TImes bestseller, a trashy pulp novel, in short, it can be anything. Please do not defile this thread by posting "I'm reading this thread". It became very unfunny a long long time ago.

I'll start. I went to the library and picked up a copy of "Sam Walton, Made In America: My Story" by Sam Walton. I'm not the entreprenurial type myself and I'm only about 20% of the way thru the book - but I find it interesting how he built Wal-Mart to be such a powerhouse of a corporation. Some of the ideas he talks about can actually be put to use in almost any type of corporate environment.

Well, what are YOU reading now?

I liked it. Good story. Good human relationship story. Little action.

I recently read "5th Ave. 5 a.m." about the making of the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. I am fixin to reread the novella by Capote. The book and movie are quite different.

The movie has been on TNT a lot lately because Blake Edwards, the director, was featured on TNT because he passed on. Also Mickey Rooney is the featured actor this month and he played the Japanese neighbor.

I just completed a study of the strategy of the War Between the States called “The Grand Design,” by Donald Stoker. It was a quick read on my Kindle, and a really excellent, quick read. Learned some stuff.

When your hardcopy library reaches 5000, like mine did a few years ago, you’ll reverse course. Trust me.

My Kindle has become my new best friend.

The New Majority--President Nixon At Mid-Passage (sine loco:, Gerard Banks, 1973

In this thin book, which got limited circulation, Pat Buchanan analyzes President Nixon's successes and failures in his first term, takes note of the problems he will be facing, and speculates as to his legacy. This was published in February, 1973, before the Watergate scandal metastasized--in fact, I haven't seen so much as a mention of Watergate.

“Rainbow Six” is the last book Clancy actually wrote. “Dead or Alive” was ghostwritten by another person using his name as a marketing tool. Big, easy bucks in that sort of fraud!

I'm currently reading "Senatorial Privilege: The Chappaquiddick Cover-up," the paperback edition by Leo Damore, published in 1988 by Dell. Although I'm old enough to have some recollection of the infamous incident where a young lady drowned as a result of Ted Kennedy's recklessness, I hadn't thought about it much back then, as it was somewhat overshadowed by the first manned lunar landing that same weekend in 1969.

The book gives you a good idea as to how the fundamental principles of American government and society were being trashed even back then for the benefit of the political class.
