Target Cashier Didn't Charge Me For DVD. Should I Tell Them?
The Consumerist ^ | 12/21/2010 | Chris Moran

Posted on 12/21/2010 8:13:48 AM PST by Tazzo

When I got home, I noticed that the receipt showed that the cashier had only charged me for one of the sets. I did not notice if she put both under the scanner so I don't know if it is a misread or an error on the part of the cashier.

There was a woman in front of me who caused her nearly a half hour of grief over coupons and sale prices, so she was a little distracted when she got to me. I don't want her to lose her job, but I feel the need to call and tell them that I was not charged for all my items.

It is only a $20 DVD but I feel a twinge on honesty. I would love to have the opinion of your readers.

Sound advice, and a good conscience to boot!

It’s quite possible you have no soul at all. NONE. Zero. In fact, I’m starting to suspect you are Cthulu. Would you be so kind as to teach me new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy myself, until all the earth would flame in a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom?

You should consider how much you value your time. For me, it would be about $50 per hour for such activity. Consider this: it would take 15 minutes to get to the store, about 15 minutes to find the right person at the store and explain the situation, and about 15 minutes to return home. The value of my time, by my reckoning, would be about $38. Cost of gas and wear and tear on the car would probably be another $2, so call it $40.

For starters at $50 an hour smarts why did you not notice a $20 undercharge at the time? I am willing to bet you would not only notice an overcharge, but would take the time to get your money back if you had neglected to notice at the check out.

Secondly, customer service is at the entrance - not a difficult task

Those big box stores will adhere to company policy first and “shrinkage” and if they see a teller that let go a $20 DVD they would let that employee go, there is plenty more employees waiting in line.

But if that DVD was never scanned then they wouldn’t know, if its returned they would see which teller it was, the buyer goes home feeling super self righteous and of course must tell the internetverse about it but what about the poor teller who may at the very least get a check mark against their record of employment?

I could not feel so good afterward if I was to find out, especially in a small town that my better intentions resulted in someone elses worse off results.

In summary I would chalk this up like finding a coin or a bill on the ground, its fortune, and fortune can be fickle.

But with fortune does come the responsibility of consequences, be it internal or external.

Now back to the original dilemma, first off I hate Trget so I am biased, secondly I have never had this situation happen to me, thirdly with such of the external consequences such as I have just previously described I may not tempt the fate of others and I would just let it be, chances are what nobody knows hurts nobody.

Except certain morality ninjas.

Mrs. Scoutmaster asked to speak with the store manager. He listened and told her that, if the register showed a $40 shortage at the end of the night, Mrs. Scoutmaster could return to the store and return the money.

Wow, what nerve. I would have rescinded the offer by that point.

Pretty offensive implication, since I can’t think of a single Christian who as ever done ANYTHING immoral...

Let an atheist tell you a story. Talking to the wife one evening after a visit to the store I always go to, and she asked me for some cash - I normally don’t carry much, but I stick my hand in my pocket and pull out a $50. Where’d that come from? I’d been at the store earlier and had gotten 5 bucks change and the clerk mistakenly gave me a $50 and I didn’t notice. I go back to the store and go up to the service counter and ask for the night manager so I can return the money. I begin to explain the situation and he starts shaking his head saying, “no, no, no... I can’t do anything...” thinking I’m trying to scam him. Again I try to explain, this isn’t MY money, it’s HIS - I just want my five dollars. “No, no, no...” I folder the fifty in half, set it on the counter and walked out. By the time I got home, the store had called. They finally figured it out and found out who I was from the receipt (I used my check card), and were calling to apologize, “I’m very sorry, it’s just so unusual for something like this to happen”, was what he said. I told him that I didn’t know what to think, but an honest person is more likely to see honesty in others, and he could think about that until the next time he sees me. That was about 15 years ago, and to this day, that man (he’s now the district manager) calls me by name (as do about half the other folks that work there) when I go to that store and reminds me how happy his company is to have me as a customer. No god involved.

Yes. Of course. This happened to me this past weekend at a Target store. Cashier forgot to ring up the largest item on my bill. I immediately pointed it out and had her ring it up.

This should be a "no brainer".

If you call and tell them she will lose her job. They will be able to trace by the register number who’s mistake it was and she will be fired for it.

I would have liked to be a fly on the wall when she counted out her register that evening.

I would have gone to the manager the next day. Just because the employee is stupid one shouldn’t cheat the merchant.

Well when they do, they are violating their very structured ethics. Christians know that no one is without sin.

Let an atheist tell you a story

They usually do.

No god involved.

Then how would you possibly know stealing is wrong? God made you do it.
