Target Cashier Didn't Charge Me For DVD. Should I Tell Them?
The Consumerist ^ | 12/21/2010 | Chris Moran

Posted on 12/21/2010 8:13:48 AM PST by Tazzo

When I got home, I noticed that the receipt showed that the cashier had only charged me for one of the sets. I did not notice if she put both under the scanner so I don't know if it is a misread or an error on the part of the cashier.

There was a woman in front of me who caused her nearly a half hour of grief over coupons and sale prices, so she was a little distracted when she got to me. I don't want her to lose her job, but I feel the need to call and tell them that I was not charged for all my items.

It is only a $20 DVD but I feel a twinge on honesty. I would love to have the opinion of your readers.

I cant believe you have to ask. Integrity is doing the right thing and not having to broadcast when you do.

Chris Moran - may you see that DVD on the back of your eyelids every night when you shut your eyes to try to sleep.

He superglued them to his eyeballs, so that's how it worked out.

How about this. Just walk into Target and restock the DVD. They probably won’t stop to ask you about stuff you take in. If you are asked, say what you’re doing, and that you don’t want the clerk to get in trouble...they’ll probably emphathize with that. Most likely, you’ll just end up putting the DVD back, your conscience will be clear, and the clerk will not be on the spot. Talk with the clerk on the way out. Smiles all around.

Of course, if you put no value on your time, your decision would be otherwise.

If you believe in God, you answer to Him not the store and what He thinks of your actions.

If you do not believe in God, but care about the world you live in, you need to ask yourself if you mind others paying more because the company has to build in loss costs into the price of everything.

If you don't care about anyone but yourself, then don't bother telling them.

Where the heck are these mythical “mom and pop” stores I hear about so often? The ones I knew of went out of business years ago because they charged too much! But that’s a digression.....

If you don’t think honesty compels you to return it to a big box store, please remember that cashiers’ tills must balance at the end of the day. If short, the cashier will get billed. If short a certain number of times the cashier will be fired!

If it’s ok to rip off the “big box” store, then it must be ok soak the rich with high taxes in your mind!

I don’t believe in fairy tales. But if the Honest Abe stories were true, then he put an extraordinarily low price on the value of his time.

Most folks won’t even bend over to pick up a penny for their own account, much less walk six miles for another’s.

I walked up to the bank counter in Krogers and saw a wad of bills as big as my fist laying on the floor next to the wall. Without thinking I grabbed it and showed the clerk. She took it a little too fast and laid it down, said nothing. Always wondered if the person that lost it got it back. I hope so.

Once I found a credit card laying on the parking lot of Luby’s.
I called the woman and returned it to her home.
She was a lone elderly woman and it made her and me very happy.

Return it, you’ll feel better if nothing else.

If I catch something during the transaction, or immediately thereafter, I’ll get it corrected. If it’s well after the fact, or would require a lot of effort to fix, I’ll just let it go unless it was a substantially large amount of money (regardless of whether it was me or the store that benefited). I figure that unintentional errors happen at comparable rates in both directions so it all works out in the long run.

I once ordered a shipment of 8 crabcakes (in dry ice)from G&M’s in Maryland (crabcakes so good, I gladly pay for shipping from MD to Connecticut). One week before Christmas, sitting on my doorstep, was 16 cakes, plus a huge assortment of other seafood. Order cost me $80, value of the food delivered was around $350. I immediately called them, and found that they had combined two orders going to CT. I offered to deliver the other order to the other address (only one town over), and they said “Find someone to share with, and have a merry Christmas.” My neighbors loved our gifts that year.

If you are Nancy Pelosi, the answer is NO, do not return it, because this demonstrates the GREED of the Capitalist System. Besides, we had to get the DVD for free to see what was in it. Furthermore, stealing DVD’s creates jobs!

If you are Harry Reid, the answer is NO, do not return it, because you will be able to cram the DVD down the cashiers throat a few days before Christmas.

If you are Louise Slaughter, you can just Deem It Purchased, so there is no dilemma.

If you are Barack Obama, you can just Double Down and steal another one.

I've had that happen to me before, usually I catch it before giving them my money. I add up what my bill should be before I go to checkout - and if they're wrong either way - scanning something twice, or not scanning something I catch it. But Christmas is different. Too much stuff - harried clerks, crowds whatever - we're all off our game. Just go back to the store, show them the receipt, and tell them you weren't charged. Explain about the confusion. The check out person won't be fired - it was an honest mistake on her part.
