On Sunday there was a thread that somehow ended up with postings of various different music videos. One of those videos really caught my attention, but I forgot to bookmark it, and now I cannot locate it here or youtube.
It was a group of 3 girls with beehive hairdos, and I believe they were from Winnipeg Manitoba.
I can't remember anything else but the ethereal quality of the music.
The "video" (actually just a sound file with a still of the girls' album cover) was absolutely fascinating, using several different tempos at the same time, then overlapping and melding together, just to work themselves apart again.
There was a comment that this group were the ultimate masters of polyrhythm, and it is obvious to any Zappa fan that these girls were influential in his early 1970's work
Zappa had it exactly right...The Shaggs are better than the Beatles. Brilliant aboriginal music played with honesty and surprising complexity. Before anyone dismisses these gals, listen to the songs a lot and you'll begin to appreciate the genius. It's like an Escher painting for the ears. Awesome!
The Shaggs. I’m just not hearing the genius there, but there’s no accounting for taste.
As far as polyrhythm goes, I think it’s okay for people to do what they want in their own homes, as long as it’s not “in your face.”
I don’t want my little boy coming home one day tapping his loafers in some indecipherable tempo and calling it a “lifestyle choice”.
Slings and Arrows, will you please make sure I am on any and all of your pinglists? I know of just one.
You are added to the Kitty Ping List and the Not-A-Ping-List. Should I ever create a Shaggs Polyrhythm Ping List, I’ll add you to that too.
