Do They Know It's Christmas was worst song in the world, admits Bob Geldof

If you haven’t heard a rendition of Do They Know It’s Christmas yet this year, it’s only a matter of time.

But should you curse Bob Geldof for writing That Song, you’ll be in good company. He’s fed up with it too.

The single was released 26 years ago today as Geldof set up Band Aid to raise money for famine-hit Ethiopia.

And although it became the biggest selling single in the world at the time, it seems he’s had enough. He said: ‘I am responsible for two of the worst songs in history. One is Do They Know It’s Christmas? and the other one is We Are The World.

'Any day soon, I will go to the supermarket, head to the meat counter and it will be playing. Every ****ing Christmas.’

He said carol singers also include it in their repertoire when they visit his South London home each year, alongside the more traditional Silent Night.

The former Boomtown Rats frontman, 59, added: ‘Sometimes I think that’s wild because I wrote it. Or else I am thinking how much I want them to stop because they are doing it really badly.’ Geldof co-wrote the song with singer Midge Ure.

The campaign, which went on to raise more than £100million, was inspired by Michael Buerk’s BBC news report on Ethiopia’s famine.

Musicians including Sting, Bono, George Michael and Phil Collins sang on the Band Aid track.

Its success led to the release of U.S. charity single We Are the World months later.

I agree, nothing makes me change a radio station faster than that strinkin’ song.

Agreed on both. Check out the ext remix which I linked above; the names in the middle will bring back memories of 80s
new wave and rock (for good or bad): Style Council, Bananarama, Big Country, Duran Duran, etc.

Some of the B-Rats music might be good for a memory:
Up all night, ooh...stayin’ up all night
Say it ain’t so Joe

and then of course there’s the one inspired by someone who shot a bunch of people because they didn’t like Mondays.

I gotta bring it up again—laughed when I read one of the “Letters FROM The Editor” in National Lampoon:

Dear Sirs:
Imagine no possessions. What a terrible, terrible
thought.

Yoko Ono
New York City

(also: Dear Sirs:
Something in the way he moves me.

Oh I love the Muppet version with Miss Piggy singing the 5 golden rings part.
John Denver was on their Christmas show and sang with them.

That first one was of course later a hit for skiffle-pop guy Lonnie Donegan as Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour (joke during it: “If tin whistles are made o’ tin, what are foghorns made of?”)

If you're talking about the remake by Madonna no problem. If your badmouthing Eartha Kitt them's fightin' words.

I haven't heard the Eartha Kitt version, but I doubt I would find the song palatable regardless of who sang it.

The other thing that comes to mind is that if this song came out today, the line “let them know it’s Christmas time” would probably be considered culturally insensitive to Muslims and would earn a protest from CAIR.

Oh, yes: “A Wonderful Christmas Time” - almost forgot about that one (dammit!). A sickly sweet Yuletide confection chock full of empty calories, hung upon a stupefyingly repetitive chorus that makes you want to drive your sleigh into a brick wall. Every year, I hear that song and almost wish that Paul had been the one living in the Dakota.

The end of your post reminds me of a bit done by comic Judy Tenuta in which she imitates Yoko: “kiss kiss kiss don’t worry don’t worry don’t worry...don’t start a warrrrrrrlrllll...don’t go to warrrrrrrrrrrrllll..I’m sorry, but if that guy (Mark David Chapman) had just aimed a little to the left...he’d have been a hero!”

LOL. I know it’s not nice to think such thoughts, but truly bad music can have that effect on people. Just consider: if John Lennon had lived, today he’d be 70 years old, sporting a white ponytail and writing incoherent songs about Global Warming. Is that really how we’d want to remember him? Look at his old chum McCartney, who survived to become a plastic-faced 65-year old vegan billionaire with a preposterous teenage haircut.

Worst Christmas music ever is anything by Mannheim Steamroller.

I stop listening to Rush every December 1st so I don't have to listen to them.

I’d agree.

Not only is it awful, but every time I hear the line “there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas” I cringe.

No Sh*t Sherlock - it’s summer in Africa in December. If there was snow there’d be bigger problems then the sap you’re singing about!
