Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010
Senate Bill 510, that is set to come up for a vote this weekend is being called by some as the most dangerous bill in the history of the US. Essentially it is to our food what the bailouts were to the economy, the only difference being we can live without money.
“If accepted [S 510] would preclude the public’s right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes. It will become the most offensive authority against the cultivation, trade and consumption of food and agricultural products of one’s choice. The passage of this bill will extend control over all food in the US, violating a fundamental human right to food. It will create higher compliance costs for smaller producers, putting them at a competitive disadvantage against corporate farmers and producers who can more easily absorb costs, fees, and possible fines, furthermore products not grown according to designated standards will be considered adulterated and your business records will be subject to warrant less searches by inspectors from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), all this without any evidence that you have violated any law.

I am so busted. I not only grow tomatoes but I give some to my neighbors. This bill is bad but this article is worse.
We would be super busted too... we grow tomatoes, cucumbers, blueberrries, blackberries, mulberries, squash, eggplant, green beans, grapes, peaches, cherries, basil, rosemary (we have one plant that is about 9 ft x 9 ft), thyme, mellons, peppers, lettuce, chard, and etc. Several of our neighbors would be busted too...

While I appreciate Thomas' conservatism and Constitutionalism, was this one decision the one that makes the worst result -
Don't think that people will be willing to trade guns for food, once "they" control all the food?
Sheesh, a woman is supposed to have some magical, sacred right emanating from the outline of the Constitution to kill her offspring in the womb, but you can't safely decide what to put on your own fork that proceeds to your mouth.

Elk, Idon’t know anything about Thomas having anything to do with this or not. I just recall being in school, (I think it was a class on Globalization) and this guy is standing there telling us that these companies have been doing this in the third world for quite a while. I just remember being shocked, and thinking to myself...can these people really do this? Many years ago, as a kid, igrew my own little garden of corn and tomatoes. Well, I’m no farmer, but just planting the seeds in the ground got me a return. NOw, it seems the chem companies have got it fixed so you can’t do that. You buy seeds from them that give you a crop once and then you have to go back to them and buy more of their seeds instead of planting part of your yield.
And we worry about them taking our guns? (I’m pro 2nd amendment.) But now they can make it impossible for you to support yourself by growing your own food. This never should have happened. Doesn’t it make you kind of thing about a tree and a rope? This kind of thing should be outlawed.
How much is “hysterical hype” and how much is correct concerning noncommercial growers, i.e. home gardeners, cooperative gardens, communes, community gardens, etc.?
What about seed sales from small sellers, especially over the Internet?
I assume you've been working on this, same as you did on the animal ID legislation. If not, then sorry for bothering you.
Let the revolution begin.
