Good morning gardeners. Hope all of you and your winter gardens are doing well. Nothing but perfect Autumn weather here in Mississippi. We may be getting some needed rain the first part of this coming week.
If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.
“the weather has been lovely but nothing is getting done. “
LOL. I understand. The weather here has been so great this week, and I have so squandered it, by just sitting in the Sun and enjoying it! I did get a little done, but not much!
I received one from Gurneys this week!
Well, then...let’s see what the mailman brings today... :-)
Other than getting in my garlic (which is putting up shoots in spite of the cooler weather)I’m not doing much but dreaming of next year’s garden. However, I DID make two purchases toward that. I bought a two-tiered raised garden marked down at Lowes from $100 to $20. Then, yesterday, I found a tumbler composter marked from $90 to $10! I’m already starting compost in it! I’ve learned to love compost!
You may be at the beginning of a very interesting trend...
Wow! What bargains. I haven’t been to Lowes since the Spring (it is about 40 miles away). Next year I’ll have to check it out a little more often.
A couple of years ago, my husband started checking out their gardening dept (what was left of it) at the end of the season. You can find some real markdowns! They are concentrated on getting the Christmas stuff out and trying to get rid of the other seasonal stuff. Now I’m as enthused as him about scrounging for the bargains! :-)
Hubby and I have always been scroungers. However, we have been trying to keep our spending under better control. The easiest way is to avoid stores, but then you do miss out on bargains.LOL.

More negative reviews than positive for Gurney's and T&M.
I try my best to avoid all stores! I hate to shop. If you were to happen upon me out and about it would be at our County CO-OP, Lowes or Wal-Mart. My wife works at Wal-Mart and I hate to shop there. I usually just call her and say we need the following stuff and she usually gets it right and it shows up when she gets home - neat!
They had just switched to a better T5 high out put light due to recommendations from master gardeners etc., but the catalog description had not been changed.
They explained what had happened, and I told them to just send me an additional bulb and I would be happy. Since they only sold the kits and not just replacement bulbs, they sent me the entire kit. So I got a $70.00 item for free.
Amazingly I’ve never had a bad experience with either. And we ordered >$100 from both last year. And, I’m probably the only person on the planet with a bad experience from Baker Creek.
YMMV apparently.
I make out a list, and he sticks to it better than I do.LOL.
Once or twice a year I get out just to see what's new, and get XMAS stuff.
About 45 years ago, we had moved to a small town and Hubby was teaching science. I was a stay at home mom, and he always went to get groceries. We lived just a little way out of town, so there were almost no neighbors to see me either. We were so poor, that we wouldn't even splurge on a 25 cent ice cream cone, and never went to town to eat out or anything.
People at school began to make jokes about whether I really existed. On prom night, (he was senior class sponsor) when we walked in, all talking ceased, and everyone just stared as we came in and sat down. I was sort - of embarrassed.LOL.
An outstanding link that I have used on MANY occasions...you just need to watch some of the comments. I use Territorial, but some people leave ‘negative’ comments because they don’t like the shipping costs. Whatever. Baker Creek also gets HIGH marks; I use them as well. I also get seed from Seed Savers; who got beat up on reviews because of a problem with potatoes last year. Just use discernment...I’ve never used Gurney’s and T&M.
You must have been stunning that evening!
The only garden-related thing I did today (cold & rainy day) was to throw my caved-in carved Halloweed pumpkin into the compost pile, LOL!
I have some lettuce and spinach to pick.
Possible snow tonight - and so it starts!
LOL. I don’t think I was stunning, but I was not an ugly young lady. People who see my senior picture are always shocked, and not sure that is really me. Such are the ravages of time and toil.LOL.
I love shopping at the War Surplus stores here and was at one this morning buying new cutlery for our Church rather then waste my time sharpening the rejects of members past.
War Surplus store = Dollar discount type stores
Exactly. Sounds like you had good experiences. It was just a helpful link if anyone wants to look up reviews.
Oh, make no mistake, GWD is a great site. I use it regularly. My experience with baker creek was seeds that were *not* what they were labeled. Common mistake, I know. They can’t help what their suppliers do/say till after the fact. A lot of the issues with Gurneys seem to involve ship times and disparate orders. That I can deal with. I *was* disappointed when Gardens Alive bought T&M last year. I’d dealt with the NJ office many times and hate to think all those nice people got laid off in a recession.
Speaking of, GWD has really good reviews for ‘Womacks Nursery’ in DeLeon TX. Anybody in the SE had any dealings with them? They’ve got a bunch of pear varieties that are fireblight resistant (some of them very resistant) and also difficult to obtain. Curious if anyone has dealt with them.
