Can anyone tell me about Mitch Daniels?
My Conservative good friend goes on and on about how perfect he is to save us and that we need a technocrat like Daniels in the WH.
I wanna hear the good and bad about him.
Thanks.
Unreal, dunno what to think of this guy.
I know he recently deprived a House district in Indiana of a prompt special election to fill a vacant House seat.
See post 21.
REally?
I haven’t heard anything like that.
He’s said repeatedly that he’s committed to reducing the state budget and continuing fiscal stability WITHOUT raising taxes.
I like him.
FWIW, I wouldn’t vote for the guy for dog catcher.
Between his penchant for taxes and his dismissal of social issues, I find him undesirable to represent the Republican Party in Washington, much less as POTUS.
And he's my governor.
I think that’s a very fair and balanced and substantive summary. I would add that as Director of OMB under President Bush, he earned the nickname “Mitch the Knife” for trimming budgets and spending proposals. Most of Bush’s problems with over-spending came after Daniels left OMB.
I also think it’s worth qualifying a couple of things in your and earlier posts:
Mitch isn’t against conservative social issues, he just believes that the primary focus needs to be on economic issues while this country remains in such miserable share with high unemployment and stagnant growth and structural deficits as far as the eye can see.
My guess is that he would be very good at re-establishing Federal Responsibility: making States be accountable for the problems they bring upon themselves. He would be very much against any kind of bailout of California, NY, ILL, etc. after what he put Indiana through to get its fiscal house in order.
Finally, on his being open to the VAT, I think he said that within the context of an overall reform of the tax code. I know that may sound foolish and providing an opening to the tax-and-spend loving Dems, so I guess he can be criticized for providing that opening.
I hope this helps to fill out your excellent summary but please feel free to edit/correct anything I’m suggesting here. JMHO.
Mine, too.
Our Republic cannot be saved by s leader who is unwilling to stand up against the murder of innocent, defenseless human life!
Yeah, maybe Secretary of Treasury, or SEC Chairman, but no way as President.
An outstanding, no nonsense, straight talking Governor who does not suffer fools well. He has kept Indiana upright while all of the states around us floundered. He has a decent record on the social issues though he does not push them or let them get in the way of doing what needs to be done fiscally. He has appointed pro-life judges, is well liked by Indiana Right to Life and has a pretty fair rating from the NRA, but probably does not lead enough on these issue to satisfy the single issue voters here on Freeper. I am sure you will get a lot of responses condemning him for his statement about putting the social issues on the back burner until we get our fiscal house in order, but that is exactly what most of the GOP candidates did this year and it turned out pretty well it seemed to me.
He makes hard choices and p*sses off a lot of people doing it, but doesn’t seem to care. He believes strongly in the private sector, supports choice in education, has taken on the ISTA/NEA over education reform and believes in limited government. One of his favorite saying is, “People are often amazed at how little government they need”. When asked once about his opposition to more spending for third grade remedial reading courses, his answer was simple, “By the time a child reaches third grade we have already spent $43,000 trying to teach him to read. If that isn’t enough money then I think we have a systemic problem in how the school teaches reading not a problem with lack of funding.”
He is physically not your perfect candidate, kind of short and nerdy looking, and as mentioned earlier doesn’t mince words or worry to much about being PC. I’m not sure that will be such a detriment in 2012, we elected the president from central casting last time and look what it got us.
As you can probably guess I love the guy and think he would make s great president. He is experienced, has both government and private sector experience, is bright and has been successful at almost everything he done as far as I know.
Just to really make some heads explode here I will make some comparisons between him and the hated Mitt Romney. Both have successful private sector experience, Mitch has more varied governmental experience. Both are bright, and well educated, but Mitch connects much better with the average guy on the street. Mitch has none of the question hanging around him about his conservative bona fides. Mitt is better and more presidential looking. They are about the same age. Mitt married his HS sweetheart and is still married to her, Mitch got married, then divorced and then remarried his wife. Mitt has 3 boys, Mitch has 3 girls. Mitt’s wife is nice, but reserved. Mitch’s wife is a hoot and a favorite at the Indiana State Fair where she is a judge for numerous food and largest vegetable/fruit/pig/cow/etc. contests. She even participates in the cow milking contest every year.
I hope he runs, is nominated and takes Michele Bachmann as his running mate. The Country could do much worse.
Despite my reservations, when the time comes I’ll give him a fair hearing.
I do agree that America is ready for a "nerdy", green-eyeshade President who will not sugar coat the fact that we are in for a number of years of austerity.
I agree that we should not be “means testing” Social Security and Medicare, but we are going to have to seriously cut those programs. If we don’t means test, then it will be across the board.
I’ll find it for you when I have time. On politico and I think hotair.
