CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Forty years of space history is being demolished at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral as crews worked to begin dismantling historic launch pad 39-B.
It is not yet clear when launch pad 39-B will make history again. The pad is one of two used for both the Apollo and Shuttle programs.
Shuttle Discovery is prepared for its next flight on the only remaining pad, 39-A, where it is set to launch Monday.
The last time pad 30-B was used it launched an Aries 1X, which was to be the rocket to launch astronauts to the moon again. The Aries program has since been canceled.
The director of the space center said the future for NASA is bright.
"We have been directed to build a heavy-lift rocket ... that allows us to go anywhere," director Bob Cabana said during a news conference.
Pad 39-B saw the return to flight after the Challenger accident and 53 other shuttle launches.
WTF has this country come to we are being rendered impotent in all aspects
Next Tuesday America puts out a restraining order on deconstructionists!
Obama wants to kill NASA.
Shoot he wants to kill the USA!
This clown is dismantling NASA.
Scorched earth space policy. That’s one way to make it binding on the next Congress.
I think what the article is about is that the Rotating Service Structure is being dismantled. I saw something about it a couple of weeks ago on Space.com. 39-B is being prepped for the odd chance that it will be used for a lunar program or manned asteroid landing flight.
Still, it is so sad that the manned spaceflight program we once knew and were proud of is ending. It’s still 6 days till the elections. I hope the employees, both current, former, and soon-to-be former, will remember this when they enter the voting booth. Obama and the dimoCRACKS must be made to pay a price for what they have done to the space program.
Former president Bush set the wheels in motion to permanently ground the shuttle but he also proposed the return to the moon by US astronauts. THE 1 has cancelled the moon landings. That’s what separates him from Bush.
Nice view!
We were working up on the highest level platform and man, what a view!
What a great picture, Dave!! That’s a keeper! bttt
'Course, you'd be covered in vomit!
I can fly any plane, but vertigo rules when I'm on tall buildings .......................... FRegards
Given that I was able to hang out over the edge of the roof of the John Hancock near 40 years ago, I think I have gotten acrophobia in my old age.
Nice picture to have for great memories!
Thanks greatdefender. That’s that.

Especially since we still have astronauts manning (or woman-ing) the space station...
I personally find it completely unacceptable that we'll be "hitching rides" with the Russians for the next several years, and paying them very dearly for the "taxi fare" to get there, too!
Last quote, and imperative to repeat/remind:
"Its still 6 days till the elections...
Time for some real "hope and change"...STOP the dumbing-down of America!
JMHO, of course... ;)
