It's been over three years since we last heard about Ron Howard's remake of the 1970 film Colossus: The Forbin Project, an adaptation of the 1966 sci-fi novel by Dennis Feltham Jones. But in the recent news about writer Jason Rothenberg scripting the adaptation of The Twilight Zone, Deadline included a second story unto itself.
The writer is also adapting Colossus for Universal and Imagine Entertainment, but the real gem in the story brings news that Will Smith is attached to star in the story about the world's first-ever sentient computer and the misunderstood genius who gains power over the world because of its unprecedented abilities.
In addition, the script will take cues from two additional novels that followed Jones' original story.
This would mark the first time Will Smith and Ron Howard have worked together on a project, and the first straight up sci-fi venture for Howard as a director. This seems like it might be a little similar to I, Robot, but since Deadline describes it as a Frankenstein story, there's likely more than meets the eye.

And I don't find Will Smith all that interesting either. I somehow don't see him as carrying off the scientist role as did Eric Braeden.
Colossus is one of my favorite movies. I can’t see Smith in the Forbin role, either. Braeden was perfect for that role. I imagine we’ll get a lot of blow it all up, major league special effects, when the original just allowed your mind to do the work.
I got a better idea.
Why don’t they adapt H. Beam Piper’s “The Cosmic Computer” (aka “Junkyard Planet”) instead?
Colossus: The Forbin Project is one of the greatest SciFi flicks of all time.
I agree with you two. The original film was terrific and is worth remaking - but what are they thinking getting Will Smith involved? That’s a miscast.
You know your film is in trouble if Jeff Goldblum is the best guy on screen.
Good to see Adam Baldwin in the movie though.
Do you watch Chuck? Adam Baldwin's character is great. This last week, it began as a flash-back to the 90s and Baldwin's character slammed Clinton and his screeching harpy of a wife.
“There is another system”
I didn't see it for Smith. It was a good, fun movie. To me, the whole cast brought it together and Smith's role could have been played by just about anyone.
They shouldn’t remake this film. It was dark and depressing. There is no ‘happy ending’. I don’t want to see films like that anymore. Good guys win, bad guys lose. Otherwise, forget it.
It HAS been a couple of years since Will Smith saved the world.
Bean counters. Smith’s movies average over $130 million in box office.
I didn’t realize he was on that show. I’ll have to tune in!
What’s next? A remake of “Zardoz” starring Matt Damon?
“Independence Day” and “Armagheddon” both came out about the same time, both were big, dumb, special-effect heavy brain candy... but Armagheddon was at least likably dumb. ID was just irritatingly dumb.
If you have Netflix, I'd recommend watching the first three seasons first. There's really no way to jump right in without the whole story - especially with the Buy More crew and the "Intersect."
I like ID because it was a blast of action and I’m a sucker for action shows - no plot necessary, just make things go “boom!”.
I don’t much care for Will Smith...period.
