Low Carb Alcoholics

Posted on 10/03/2010 3:51:44 PM PDT by Free Descendant

I know a lot of you guys do lo-carb diets and as I know people I assume a lot of you drink (in moderation, of course) I am wondering if you can answer my questions regarding drinking on a lo-carb diet.

Is it true that hard liquer is the best choice when on a lo-carb diet? I am avoiding beer (cries)...I've been drinking rum and diet(cries) coke. Your knowledge and experience is appreciated.

I was told that Gin and Tonic is the lowest carb drink that is common. Don’t know if it is true.
Also, if having a drink is so important to you that you need to start a thread ,maybe you should try to go without.
Just a thought.

Beer is out clearly, on a low carb diet. Althought they do have low carb beers out there they are pretty crappy.

I must discourage the drinking of hard liquor. It is not the same. Maybe you can handle it, but if you are not sure, or don’t usually drink it, give it a pass.

Wine is really the healthiest thing to drink, I think white wine has the lowest carbs (that’s part of why girls always drink it, also I think there is a concern about spillage going on there) but I think red is the best for you.

I don’t like wine, I am a beer drinker, but if you are flexible and looking to cut down on carbs I’d recommend wine.

I yoyo’d up and down with weight for years. I stopped drinking, lost 55 pounds and it’s been off for 5 years now. Alcohol is more than empty calories and carbs, I think it also slows down my metabolism. It also made me crave snacks.

Have you considered crack? Don’t see many overweight crackheads.

How low carb are you doing? Are you doing this for weight loss purposes? Are you trying to eat healthier?

Hi FD, I’m a Type II diabetic - Rum & Diet Coke is my drink of choice - cuts my morning blood sugar if I have a nightcap (or two) the night before. If I do have a beer Michelob Ultra is my preferred choice but I think a R&DC is better for you in the long run.

I was doing P90X a few months ago and one of the beachbody newsletters said if you must drink beer, drink a microbrew or Guinness stout. Limit yourself to one Guinness though.
