(09-30) 18:25 PDT OAKLAND -- Mary Kate Hallock arrived at her Oakland hills home after running errands Tuesday and found a blue note fluttering on her front door.
"Oakland police responded to your residence to investigate a burglar alarm," the handwritten note read. "While circling the rear perimeter, lab advanced on officers in a threatening manner before being shot and killed."
"Lab" was Gloria, an 11-year-old, arthritic yellow Labrador Hallock's family had owned since she was a puppy. Oakland police shot Gloria three times with a 40-caliber Glock handgun in the family's backyard while responding to a false burglar alarm at the property. The dog, police said, growled and barked at them.

No dog is safe.
Yellow labs can be dangerous predators!
This has to have become policy in many departments.
These reports have become routine, and in many scattered jurisdictions.
That’s just a shame. C’mon cops.
One dog does not present a life threatening situation. Shooting it was totally uncalled for, and I hope this sorry excuse for a police officer gets his ass canned.
What a punk/punkette.
WTF is it with these ass*** cops shooting pets
can’t they use a catch pole or they too ***** stupid ?
I’m afraid that if police don’t change their ways, I’m rooting for the homeowner that loses it and drops a few of them.
How many dogs did the FedEx, UPS, ComEd, water meter readers and mailmen have to shoot today?
no riots cause the dog was white (yellow).
Yep. Which means there is a coordinated, national police policy of slaughtering family dogs whenever even remotely feasible.
To protect police? Hardly.
To enrage and frighten the population? How is such an effect avoidable?
The questions are, who wants that effect - and why?
An 11 year old arthritic female lab? No threat whatsoever.
Fire these roidheads and fire them now. They have no business even wearing a badge and clearly like to play with their guns inappropriately.
People should shoot back.
Police are not willing to risk injury. Police depts don't like paying workmens comp over one of their cops getting bit. Shooting the dog is costless to the police. Perhaps that should change?
There is powerful pepper spray on the market, that will easily disable an aggressive dog.
I am usually on the side of the police, but this post has been self edited, if you get my meaning.
STE=Q
They manage to use beanbags for humans, why do they have to shoot an innocent, elderly dog protecting her territory, no doubt? GAAHH!!! Poor dear thing.
As local LEOs become more and more militarized with all of the latest SWAT toys, we’re going to see more and more excesses. I have nothing but contempt for any cop that shoots a harmless family pet. Anything they get back by way of retribution is justified.
Wait a second.. I thought the Oakland PD wasn’t responding to burglar alarms anymore? Or even a confirmed robbery in progress? Or do they only answer the calls if there’s a family dog available...?
I’d wager I could have had this pup wiggling and face licking in a half minute of dog “sweet talking”. It isn’t rocket science.
These cops sound like the “GET ON THE GROUND” screamer types.
