Mossberg 500 is a series of shotguns manufactured by O.F. Mossberg & Sons. The 500 series comprises widely varying models of hammerless, pump action repeaters, all of which share the same basic receiver and action, but differ in bore size, barrel length, choke options, magazine capacity, and "furniture" (stock and forearm) materials
I bought a couple of these used for my kids when they came of hunting age.
good cheap pump shotgun.
you can still by them used for $100-$200 each...
Remington 870 shotgun.
Personal preference. I miss mine. (My Pedersoli Sharps even worse.)
Spend a few more bucks and buy a Remington 870. Mossberg is OK, but Remington’s better.
I have 6 versions of this model (tactical ghost ring, breacher, JIC camo, Persuader, a 6 shot model and one other plain one. My favorite is the first, a Persuader 9 shot pump....bought it from WalMart years ago new for $199......
Spend even more and get a Benelli.
So, either on the Mossberg or the Remington 870 -
can you buy extended magazine tubes?
Personally, I think a Benelli is overpriced and over-rated. It is good but 3-4, 5 times the cost isn’t justified.
Choate Machine and Tool can provide extended tubes for many shotguns. I know I added one to a Mossberg 935 tactical semi I got.
Depending on your local jurisdiction as far as attachment, they can be had at a number of sites.
www.cheaperthandirt.com comes to mind for inexpensive parts to hang off your 870/900 guns.
Mossberg 590A1
One is the tang placement of the safety switch. It's not necessary to change the position of the shotgun from the firing position to switch it on or off.
The other is the loading gate. In the Remington there's a piece of metal that can catch fingers or gloves. To load the Mossberg you simply drop the shell in place and shove it forward making reloading much simpler.
The 500/590 series also comes drilled and tapped from the factory. The 870 requires gunsmithing to add optics.
For a hunting shotgun I'd go with the 870. For a defense weapon the 500/590 is superior IMO.
Which is the shotgun of the apocalypse?
I ain’t got Benelli bucks.
Nice guns, but Im very fond of my 870 Folder.
For the Remington 870 an extended magazine is a matter of simply replacing the magazine cap with an extension.
The Mossberg 500 requires the replacement of the entire magazine tube and a new barrel.
A pistol grip shotgun will do a number on your hand, so I finally installed a full stock with a pistol grip and a fiber optic front site in the past year. Now it is pleasant for shooting buckshot.
I have a Mossberg 590 loaded with BB shot in the hall closet, and a slug-barreled 870 in my bedroom. I also have several other 870s in the gun safe. I would trust any of them in an emergency. My favorite hunting shotgun is a Beretta Urika.
