Scientists reported new evidence on the effectiveness of that old folk remedy cranberry juice for urinary tract infections at the ACS' 240th National Meeting. "A number of controlled clinical trials these are carefully designed and conducted scientific studies done in humans have concluded that cranberry juice really is effective for preventing urinary tract infections," said Terri Anne Camesano, Ph.D., who led the study. "That has important implications, considering the size of the problem and the health care costs involved."
Estimates suggest that urinary tract infections (UTIs) account for about 8 million medical visits each year, at a total cost of more than $1.6 billion. Camesano, who is with the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, said the study set out to shed light on how cranberry juice fights E. coli, the most common cause of UTIs. The study involved growing strains of E. coli in urine collected from healthy volunteers before and after consumption of cranberry juice cocktail. The scientists then tested the E. coli for their ability to stick together and form biofilms. Biofilms are thin, slimy layers that provide an environment for bacteria to thrive.
The scientists concluded that cranberry juice cocktail prevents E. coli from sticking to other bacteria and the surface of a plastic petri dish. E. coli that doesn't stick has a better chance of being flushed out of the urinary track. The results suggest that the beneficial substances in cranberry juice could reach the urinary tract and prevent bacterial adhesion within 8 hours after consumption of cranberry juice.

Yup, and cranberry juice makes you pee like a racehorse, too.
Ow!
I hear it makes a mighty tasty wine also.
What a Coincidence — I had just e-mailed daughter on my morning smoothie conglomeration today. Cranberry/Pomegranite, banana and pineapple juice. 400% Vit. C — kinda overdid it— and probably enough sugar to explain the urge to clean the kitchen.
According to my uro-gynecologist, cranberry juice is a good aid to preventing infections, but an additional irritant to the bladder when an infection is present.
So she says drink it when you’re clear but not not when you have an active infection.
I have Lupus and suffer from chronic urinary infections.

I heard you had some mighty fine wine.
Joy to the world...
we’ve known this for 20 years! Glad “science” is now on board too!

Cranberry for treatment of UTI? Duh! When combined with acidophilus you have the natural cure in the same timeframe as when antibiotics are prescribed. Pain relieved within 2 hours.
The combination of cranberry with acidophilus is the way go. Acidophilus balances the PH in the UT by reintroducing good bacteria ~ or something like that. It has never failed me in the couple times I’ve tried it.
It works.
I don’t get a UTI often(once every 5 years tops) but I power down as much of it as I can stomach and I’m all better, often within 24 hours.
A Homeopath suggested for me that during a UTI infection to drink parsley juice (chopped parsley in water, simmer for 20 min, strain and drink). Not bad once you get used to it.
Cranberry juice as typically commercially available has too much sugar to do any good.
The active ingredient in cranberry juice is D-Manose.
Acquire a D-manose suppliment and take it.
Guaranteed UTI cure within 1 week. No antibiotics, nothing.
You are exactly right. I’ve known about cranberry juice not just preventing UTIs, but curing them since for about 30 years. But just in the last couple years learned about d-mannose and started using that instead. A tablespoon or so of tasteless powder in a glass of water several times a day and I’m cured!
Plain, unsweetened cranberry juice is too bitter to drink, but can be found. There are also cranberry liquid concentrate pills that I’ve tried. But I keep going back to the d-mannose. Use it for the dogs too if I think they need it.
Check out Solaray Crandophilus that I’ve been speaking of. It comes in pill form. I keep it refrigerated. I start off with 2 pills as soon as symptoms appear. Then 2 more pills 2 hours after that. Then by the recommended dosage. No pain and gone within 4 or 5 days. :~) The bottle will last through 4 or 5 bouts, I would think. About $20 for the bottle. I don’t take nasty tasting stuff unless there’s no other option! lol

“Acquire a D-manose suppliment and take it.

I discovered d-mannose while dealing with my one and only UTI. I’d take the antibiotics and drink d-mannose, and would feel okay for awhile, and then get sick again. In the end it was taking antibiotics for one month that killed the infection that had made its way into my prostate. I was on a thousand milligrams of Cepro and a thousand milligrams of the other common antibiotic for UTIs. If I hadn’t had a doctor smart enough to know the infection had made it into my prostate I’d be dead now. I’ve since come to think that some people who keep getting reoccurring infections get them because they don’t kill out the E.coli completely.
