Smirnoff in a 2-litre box draws criticism Friday September 03 2010

DIAGEO's first ever roll out of Smirnoff pre-mixed drinks in 2-litre boxes has, as the company would have expected, drawn criticism from quarters that believe it encourages binge drinking.

Diageo launched the 'Signature Serves' range - Smirnoff Vodka & Ocean Spray Cranberry and Smirnoff Vodka & Blood Orange - last month in Australia. The boxes have an ABV of 6.4%, serve up to 10 'standard' drinks, and retail for AUD26.99 (USD24.75) per box.

‘Signature Serves’

Can you get them monogrammed? You know, like a gift for an alcoholic instead of a bathrobe or a towel set?

I call “Feh!” on this one. How is this any different than a box of wine or one of those 5 liter beer ‘mini-kegs’?

Binge drinkers will find a way to get boozed up whether it’s premixed for them or not.

Australia is great. They sell Red Label and Cola mixed in cans. Perfect for beach BBQs.

6.4% is NOTHING, that’s not even wine or many beers from Europe.

Sweet. I'm going there in November, where do you buy them?

Lucky you. I just moved back to Texas... the land of the crazy Southern Baptists that cause “dry” counties where folks have to drive into wet counties and fill up the back of their SUVs with liquor and beer so they have it at the ready (My neighbor buys 20 cases at a time.) Consequently, there are many drunks in dry counties due to always having it on hand (not to mention the drunk drivers from driving back from the dry counties.) But the SBs are so much smarter than everyone else. *major eyeroll* Evil alcohol! (Or is it evil SB that think they should make the rules for the rest of us just like democrats?)

Hmm, I think I’d rather buy the Smirnoff 80 proof and dilute it myself. 6.4% is nothing really.

You can always mailorder them.

Alcohol in Australia is sold in 'bottle shops' similar to American liquor stores. There are a lot of standalone (often drive through) bottle shops, and most supermarkets either have a small one attached to them, or one owned by the same company as the supermarket very nearby.

How’s a person to get drunk on some girly drink of 6.4%?

Just add a shot or two of Absolut Ruby Red to the Smirnoff and Blood Orange.

Smirnoff Vodka & Ocean Spray Cranberry and Smirnoff Vodka & Blood Orange

Feh. Teenage girl drinks.

I was thinking from the title we were talking about 2 liter boxes of actual vodka.

We just had an election with a ballot for ending the dry country here. IT LOST BY 2 VOTES! (Tyler County)

The people will have it on the ballot again next time.

Premixed booze is for sissies.

I support binge drinking the old fashioned way!

What state is Tyler county in? I’m honestly amazed that dry counties still exist. I know there are still some in Arkansas.
