Good morning gardeners. This is the first year that I will have a fall garden. I have decided to try few broccoli and cabbage plants. I decided to visit our local County Co-Op a couple of days ago and they had starts of both and I bought a nine-pack cell of each. I hope they do well because we are still having 90 degree days with overnights in the mid to high 60s. They also had starts for various types of tomato plants which kind of surprised me.

great! I will definitely look in the insulation section then!
Make sure that what you buy in the insulation section is fit for gardens. You don’t want to be introducing fiber glass, or something like that. You should go on line to the SFG pages and ask Mel. They’ll answer right away. If it is a cheaper form of vermiculite, you can be sure that Mel Bartholomew will be in favor of it. He tries anything to save a buck.
Boiled p-nuts, you sure know good eatin. The produce market where I got my boxes for the move would be cooking a huge pot of boiled p-nuts every morning, outside near the pile of boxes. It was about 50 or 60 gallons, I guess. I could see corn and peppers and other stuff in there as the covered rattled and shook.
I dumped mine out of the bags when they were about 2/3 dry. Ask tubebender, or Red or fan fan. They’ll know.
Yep. Same concept.
no vermiculite at the local big box...according to their website, that is...guess it’s back to hitting the garden center...next battle will be pest control, I’m sure...
I found mine at the local Agway. $22 for 20# (about 4 c.cu.)
Store locator - http://www.agway.com/store_locator.html
I do not work for Agway. It’s just the only place in SE PA where I could find it.
none of those around here...too many city folk for a store with “ag” in it’s name...although, tractor supply isn’t too far away...
I like Mrs. Wags spagetti sauce mix. It is easy and the spices are just about perfect.
Seeds came in this week, so my fall garden is starting to go in. Still pretty darn warm here in Tampa, just at that point when every once in awhile it doesn't feel hot. I ordered from Reimer Seeds, as they had all the specific varieties for my area.
And my new 25 quart pressure canner came in the mail yesterday. Don't have anything to can, but I had to open it up and read the manual.
Need to raise a couple more beds. Was thinking about waiting until it cools off a bit, but then Home Despot is selling landscaping timbers at half price right now. I'm so weak. I'm not going to spend that much anyway. It's worth forgoing the savings to do the work in nice weather. But IT'S HALF PRICE!
Mrs. Wages bump! I didn’t think my wife could improve on her homemade fresh salsa; but she switched to Mrs. Wages’ salsa spices a couple of batches back; and the results were to die for...had the sauce with pasta for dinner last night...LOVE Mrs. Wages! Er, I mean her spice mixes...
Any gardeners on this ping list have a greehouse that compliments there garden?
I’ve been digging new potatoes for several weeks now. I have some plants with the tops dying down and some still flowering. Normally, I would dig them all when the tops die down but I’m going to try to get them all dug this week if possible because I’m worried about a freeze. I’m in the high desert in Nevada though.
That sounds delicious. I’m going to try it next time my stepson is here for dinner. He loves jalapenos.
I have a small greenhouse that I put up last winter. I am putting up a second one this month. I’m still learning but it sure gives me a jump on my very short season and I hope to carry some vegetables through the winter.
I bought some yogurt this morning and some frozen blue berries just so I could try out that crockpot recipe that was poster here. How did yours turn out? I know the amounts can be adjusted but a half gallon of yogurt might be a bit much for us at first. I had not thought of sharing with my dogs. I bet they will enjoy it but I will watch and see how they tollerate.
Have you been to Canino's produce market? We are thinking of driving there in the morning. There has to be somewhere that has better prices and quality than the grocery stores do.
Had to pick our eggplants the other night, around midnight, because instead a storm system fizzled and high pressure moved in along with a frost warning. Good thing I FReep into the wee hours, or we would have missed it.
Those eggplants are the largest and best we’ve ever grown, further proof that we are making progress in turning our dirt into soil.
It wasn’t terrrible, but it did do in the eggplants and the most tender of the perppers, but a good watering allowed the beans, tomotoes, and hardier peppers to recover. Naturally, the root crops & brassicas loved it, and asked for more. The pumpkins are on the iffy side of fully maturing or needing to be used or canned right away.
It has warmed back up again, so the survivors will have a longish Indian summer reprieve.
